Chapter 19 - THE CHILD BEFORE EVAN

Christopher Hale was born three years before Evan.
He died shortly after his fourth birthday.
The family story claimed he drowned in Arthur’s swimming pool.
Margaret said she had turned away for less than a minute.
Arthur never spoke about it.
There were no photographs of Christopher in Margaret’s house.
No birthday ornaments.
No framed school pictures.
Nothing.
“Why did nobody tell me?” I asked.
Tessa was crying.
“Mom said talking about him would destroy Dad.”
“Did Evan know?”
“Only that there had been another child.”
“He never knew the details.”
I searched public records.
The original report had been sealed after a short investigation.
Arthur’s influence may have protected the family from publicity.
Or someone may have intentionally buried the truth.
Naomi helped request the file.
The report was thin.
Christopher had a bruise across his face.
Margaret told police he received it falling near the pool.
A housekeeper gave a different statement.
She heard Margaret shouting before the splash.
The housekeeper disappeared from the report after the first interview.
No charges were filed.
Arthur later dismissed the entire staff.
Six months after Christopher’s death, he changed his will for the first time.
He created protective trusts for any future grandchildren.
He also began documenting Margaret’s behavior.
The trust had not begun as a financial gift.
It began as fear.
I told Evan.
He sat in my living room holding the report.
His hands shook.
“I remember a boy’s room.”
“I thought it was mine.”
“You were born afterward.”
He stared at the bruise described in the file.
“Did she hit him?”
“We do not know.”
Evan closed his eyes.
“I need to ask her.”
“No.”
He looked up.
“You do not need to enter her version of reality to investigate the truth.”
Naomi located the former housekeeper.
Her name was Dolores Finch.
She was eighty-one and living in Arizona.
She agreed to a recorded interview.
Dolores remembered Christopher clearly.
“He was a sweet child.”
“He spilled milk at lunch.”
“Margaret slapped him.”
“Arthur told her never to touch him again.”
“What happened near the pool?” Naomi asked.
Dolores looked toward the camera.
“Margaret dragged him outside.”
“She said he needed to learn not to cry.”
“I heard him screaming.”
“Then I heard the water.”
“Did you see her push him?”
“No.”
“When I reached the pool, she was standing on the deck.”
“Christopher was in the water.”
“Why did you change your statement?”
Dolores’s eyes filled with tears.
“Margaret threatened my daughter.”
“She knew where my little girl went to school.”
The recording ended.
Evan stared at the dark screen.
“My mother may have killed him.”
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
The call came from the prison.
Margaret Hale had requested an emergency conversation.

She claimed she knew who sent the anonymous message.
And she claimed Christopher had not drowned.
