Chapter 6 – Brenda’s Final Bargain

Brenda Cole had spent years preparing for the day she would become Mrs. Andrew Whitmore.
She had chosen the engagement ring she expected him to buy.
She had met with a designer about renovating Mariana’s bedroom.
She had even prepared a list of charities she would publicly support once she became the new face of the Whitmore family.
She had planned everything.
Except the collapse.
Now she sat in a private conference room with two attorneys.
The evidence against her was considerable.
The emerald necklace.
The false accusation.
The corporate payments.
The apartment purchased through company funds.
Messages between her and Andrew discussing how to move money before the divorce.
And most damaging of all, recordings from the mansion’s security system.
Mariana had installed the upgraded system herself after a break-in two years earlier.
The cameras captured Brenda entering Margaret’s room.
They showed her removing the necklace.
They recorded her placing the empty velvet box in Mariana’s closet.
They also captured a conversation between Brenda and Margaret.
“Once Andrew believes she stole it, he’ll never forgive her.”
“You’re sure?”
“He already wants a reason.”
Brenda’s attorney closed the laptop.
“The prosecution is willing to discuss cooperation.”
Brenda crossed her arms.
“Against Andrew?”
“And possibly Margaret.”
Brenda stared at the mirrored wall.
She had expected Andrew to protect her.
Instead, he had stopped answering her calls.
His lawyers were claiming she acted alone.
He had released a statement describing her as a “former consultant who abused his trust.”
Former consultant.
After three years of promises.
Three years of secret trips.
Three years of listening to him complain about his wife.
Three years of believing she would inherit Mariana’s life.
“What happens if I cooperate?” Brenda asked.
Her attorney answered carefully.
“You may receive reduced charges. No guarantees.”
Brenda looked down at her hands.
She remembered Mariana walking out of the mansion.
The calmness in her voice.
The warning in her smile.
Brenda had mistaken restraint for weakness.
They all had.
“What do they want?”
“Documents. Messages. Account access. Everything Andrew asked you to hide.”
Brenda leaned back.
Then she smiled bitterly.
“He kept copies in the Harbor Point apartment.”
The attorneys exchanged a glance.
“What copies?”
“Payment records. Communications with city officials. Fake consulting contracts. He said he needed insurance in case the board turned against him.”
“Do you have access?”
“I know the code.”
Within hours, investigators entered the apartment.
They found two encrypted laptops, six external drives, and a locked cabinet containing contracts linked to shell companies.
The evidence expanded the investigation far beyond the stolen necklace.
Andrew had bribed officials.
He had falsified valuations.
He had transferred company funds into personal accounts.
He had also prepared a plan to blame the financial irregularities on Mariana.
A draft letter described her as an unstable spouse who interfered in company affairs.
A medical report had been fabricated to suggest she suffered from emotional problems.
The plan was clear.
Once Andrew divorced her, he intended to discredit her before she could expose him.
When Mariana received the report, she read every page.
Her father stood beside the window.
“Do you want me to make this disappear quietly?” Rafael asked.
Mariana looked at him.
He did not mean hide the evidence.
He meant use the Escalante influence to end Andrew’s public life without a trial.
“No,” Mariana said.
“He tried to destroy your credibility.”
“Then the truth should destroy his.”
Rafael nodded.
Mariana closed the folder.
She no longer felt heartbreak.
What remained was clarity.
May you like
Andrew had not become cruel in a single night.
He had simply reached the point where he no longer bothered to hide it.
