CHAPTER 1 The Blood on the Crystal Floor

CHAPTER 1
The Blood on the Crystal Floor
The first thing Eleanor Hart noticed wasn't the pain.
It was the silence.
The laughter that had filled the grand dining hall only seconds earlier vanished as if someone had stolen the air from the room.
A shard of white porcelain spun across the polished marble floor before coming to rest beneath an antique oak dining table that had been in the Ashcroft family for nearly a century.
Warm blood trickled down the side of Eleanor's face.
It slipped beneath her jaw, stained the collar of her ivory blouse, and dripped onto the crystal floor one drop at a time.
Nobody moved.
Not one of the twenty-three people seated around the enormous table spoke.
Outside, the vineyards surrounding the Ashcroft Estate glowed beneath the fading California sunset. Rows of grapevines stretched toward rolling hills, their leaves dancing gently in the evening breeze.
Inside the mansion, however, everything had frozen.
Richard Ashcroft slowly lowered his trembling hand.
The heavy porcelain dinner plate he had thrown moments earlier had exploded against his wife's temple.
Tiny fragments still clung to her hair.
His breathing was heavy.
His expensive navy suit remained perfectly pressed despite the violence he had just unleashed.
Across the table, his mother calmly folded her linen napkin.
Vivian Ashcroft had always believed appearances mattered more than truth.
Tonight was no different.
"What have you done?" someone whispered.
Richard looked around the table before answering.
"She forced me."
His voice was surprisingly steady.
"As always."
Several relatives immediately nodded.
Of course they did.
They always did.
Eleanor pressed one trembling hand against the side of her head.
When she pulled it away, her fingers were covered in bright red blood.
For just a moment...
She remembered another dinner.
Nine years earlier.
Different house.
Different table.
Different family.
Her father had smiled as he handed her the keys to a small condominium overlooking San Francisco Bay.
"You earned this," he'd said proudly.
"No one can ever take away something you've built with your own hands."
She had believed him.
Back then she worked fourteen-hour days as a structural engineer.
She skipped holidays.
Worked weekends.
Sold her first car instead of taking out another loan.
Every dollar had been carefully saved.
Every mortgage payment had been made on time.
The condo represented twelve years of sacrifice.
It wasn't simply property.
It was freedom.
Tonight...
Richard's family had decided it belonged to them.
Vivian cleared her throat.
"I think we've all become emotional."
Emotional?
Eleanor almost laughed.
Blood continued dripping onto the marble floor.
A maid standing near the doorway looked horrified but dared not move.
She understood the rules of the Ashcroft household.
Employees never interfered.
Ever.
Richard's younger brother Daniel shifted uncomfortably in his chair.
Unlike the others, he couldn't meet Eleanor's eyes.
His wife, Claire, sat beside him gripping the stem of her wineglass so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Claire had married into the Ashcroft family only four years earlier.
She had learned quickly that silence kept people alive.
Vivian rose gracefully.
"We're family."
She spoke as though discussing dessert instead of assault.
"Richard lost his temper."
"It happens."
"We'll clean everything up."
She reached toward Eleanor.
Eleanor stepped backward.
"No."
The single word echoed through the room.
Vivian stopped smiling.
"You need medical attention."
"I need the police."
Every face changed.
Immediately.
Richard took one slow step forward.
"Eleanor."
"Don't."
His voice had become dangerously calm.
"You don't want to make a mistake."
She stared directly into his eyes.
"I already did."
"When I married you."
Someone gasped.
Vivian's husband slammed his hand onto the table.
"Enough!"
"You'll destroy this family!"
Eleanor looked around the room.
Destroy?
The family had already destroyed itself.
Years ago.
Tonight merely exposed the cracks.
She reached into her handbag.
Several relatives stiffened.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
For one brief second...
He looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
She pulled out her phone.
Richard lunged instinctively.
Daniel grabbed his brother's arm.
"Richard!"
The movement lasted less than two seconds.
Long enough for Eleanor to unlock her screen.
She dialed three numbers.
9...
1...
1...
The call connected.
"This is emergency dispatch."
"My husband assaulted me."
Her voice remained remarkably calm.
"I'm at Ashcroft Vineyard Estate."
"I've suffered a head injury."
"There are twenty-three witnesses."
The dining room erupted.
Vivian hurried toward Eleanor.
"Hang up."
"You'll ruin all of us."
Richard's father snatched the cordless house phone from a nearby table.
"No police are coming here."
Claire suddenly stood.
"No."
Everyone turned.
She rarely spoke during family gatherings.
She walked quietly until she stood between Eleanor and Richard.
Her entire body shook.
But she never stepped aside.
"You've hurt enough people."
Richard stared at his sister-in-law.
"What did you say?"
Claire swallowed hard.
"I said..."
"No more."
Outside...
Far beyond the iron entrance gates...
The distant sound of approaching sirens drifted across the vineyards.
Blue and red lights flickered against the darkening sky.
Panic spread around the table.
Relatives immediately began rehearsing identical stories.
"It slipped."
"It was an accident."
"She fell."
"We didn't actually see anything."
Eleanor watched them with growing disbelief.
Twenty-three educated adults.
Twenty-three successful professionals.
Twenty-three people choosing lies over truth.
Then Claire quietly reached into the pocket of her cardigan.
She hesitated only a second.
Before pressing a tiny silver USB drive into Eleanor's bloodstained hand.
Their fingers touched briefly.
Claire leaned close enough that no one else could hear.
"They think this dinner was about your condo."
"It wasn't."
Eleanor frowned.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"They needed everyone together..."
"...because someone discovered what your father found before he died."
The words hit harder than the porcelain plate.
"My father?"
Claire nodded almost invisibly.
"The drive contains everything."
"Bank records."
"Videos."
"Names."
"They've spent eight years making sure no one ever saw it."
Footsteps thundered through the entrance hall.
Someone pounded forcefully on the front door.
"Police Department!"
"Open the door!"
Richard's face turned completely white.
But he wasn't looking at Eleanor anymore.
His eyes remained fixed...
...on the tiny silver flash drive hidden inside her trembling hand.
At that moment...
Eleanor realized something far more terrifying than being attacked.
The Ashcroft family wasn't afraid of an assault investigation.
They were terrified of what would happen...
May you like
...if anyone opened that drive.
