Chapter 5 - THE EMPTY HOUSE
Gideon did not scream.
He did not collapse.
Years in emergency medicine had taught him how to function while terror moved through his body.
He gave police every detail.
Lumi’s medication.
Her fears.
Her likely responses.
The way she rubbed her thumb against her index finger when trying not to cry.
The way she went silent when adults argued.
The way she would obey if someone threatened Gideon.
Amber Alerts went out across three states.
Maris’s face appeared on every news station.
Samantha disappeared from the hospital.
Her car was found near the airport.
Vane claimed he had no knowledge of the abduction.
His attorney described Maris and Samantha as “emotionally unstable women acting independently.”
Keene did not believe him.
Neither did Gideon.
Lumi’s hidden camera footage provided one lead.
On the night before the abduction, a white van circled the protected building.
Traffic cameras captured part of the plate.
The vehicle belonged to a shell company called Bright Harbor Youth Services.
Bright Harbor operated residential treatment homes for children with behavioral disorders.
Its director was Elliot Vane’s sister, Meredith.
Police raided the nearest facility.
Lumi was not there.
They found six children restrained in locked rooms.
Four had active custody disputes.
Two had parents who claimed the children were taken after false psychological evaluations.
The operation was larger than Gideon’s case.
Vane used family courts to funnel children into private facilities.
The facilities billed insurance, collected state funds, and pressured parents into signing away rights.
Children who resisted were medicated.
Recorded.
Reframed as unstable.
Lumi had seen the machinery before Gideon did.
A recovered employee schedule showed Maris visited Bright Harbor fourteen times.
Samantha provided medical protocols.
Dr. Price wrote diagnoses.
Maris was not merely helping Vane attack Gideon.
She was part of a pipeline.
Keene found a list of children labeled “conversion cases.”
Lumi’s name appeared at the bottom.
Status: URGENT TRANSFER.
Destination: RED FARM.
No address.
Gideon searched every memory of Maris.
She once mentioned a childhood summer camp called Red Farm.
He found an old photograph in a drawer.
Maris stood beside a red barn in Vermont.
On the back was an address.
Police flew north.
The property appeared abandoned.
The barn was empty.
Inside the farmhouse, they found sleeping bags, children’s medication, and burnt documents.
A basement room contained camera equipment identical to the setup in Gideon’s house.
On the wall were photographs of fourteen children.
Lumi’s picture had a red circle around it.
Beneath the farmhouse, agents found a tunnel leading to an old storm shelter.
Inside were Samantha’s clothes.
Blood stained one sleeve.
No body.
A laptop remained on the table.
One video file had been recorded that morning.
Maris sat facing the camera.
“I know Gideon will find this.”
She looked exhausted.
A bruise darkened her cheek.
“Samantha took Lumi from me.”
Gideon stopped breathing.
Maris continued.
“I was supposed to deliver her to Vane. I changed my mind.”
She described years of coercion.
Vane recruited her when she was drowning in debt.
At first, she only collected information about Gideon.
Then she stayed.
She claimed she loved him.
She claimed the custody scheme was supposed to end with legal separation, not harm to Lumi.
Gideon watched without sympathy.
Love did not erase the basement chair.
Maris said Samantha killed Dr. Price after Price threatened to cooperate.
The office fire was meant to destroy records and fake Maris’s death.
Maris escaped.
She took Lumi because she believed Gideon’s house was compromised.
Samantha intercepted them.
At the end of the video, Maris gave a location.
“Old Saint Brigid’s Hospital. Pediatric wing.”
The hospital had been abandoned for fifteen years.
Police arrived after dark.
They found Maris tied to a bedframe.
Alive.
Samantha was gone.
So was Lumi.
Maris looked at Gideon.
“She took her downstairs.”
“What’s downstairs?”
