Chapter 12 - THE PROMISE

The recording was made in a hospital room eight years earlier.

Lily's mother, Caroline, sounded tired but calm.

"Emma, you probably won't remember me. You were the young nursing aide who stayed after your shift when my newborn would not stop crying. You sang in Spanish until Lily slept. You told me frightened children need one honest adult who refuses to look away."

Emma covered her mouth.

She remembered a frightened young mother and a tiny baby in a pink cap. She had never known their last name.

Caroline continued.

"If anything happens to me, Victor will try to control Lily's trust. Grant trusts numbers too much and people too easily. I placed a sealed copy of the real ledger with the hospital foundation. Emma Reyes is named as an independent witness because she asked for nothing from us."

The recording ended.

Grant looked stunned. "Renata hired you because of this."

Emma understood. Renata had not selected a desperate employee by chance. She had brought Emma close so she could watch her, control her, and eventually blame her.

The investigator confirmed it. Renata had altered staffing records to place Emma inside the estate.

"She knew your signature could authenticate the sealed ledger," the investigator said. "She planned to discredit you before the wedding."

Emma thought of her overdue rent, her mother's medical bills, and Renata's threat.

Every weakness had been studied.

Grant said, "The foundation vault opens at nine. We'll go together."

But when they arrived, the vault door was already open.

The ledger was gone.

On the floor lay Owen Marsh's security badge.
