Chapter 7 - The Dead Man Behind the DebtAdrian's face turned cold.

“Who?”

Margaret did not answer.

“Mother.”

Silence.

Emily watched them.

For once, she was no longer the least informed person in the room.

Adrian looked genuinely frightened.

He stepped closer.

“Who has been dead for eleven years?”

Margaret lowered the floral teacup.

“Your father.”

Adrian froze.

“My father died in Connecticut.”

“No.”

“You were at the funeral.”

“Yes.”

“You identified him.”

“No.”

The word stopped him.

Margaret continued.

“You were told I did.”

Adrian looked at her as if she had become a stranger.

Emily remembered the feeling.

The moment you discovered someone with power had rewritten your reality and expected gratitude for the lie.

Adrian's voice dropped.

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I don't know anymore.”

Emily crossed her arms.

“What does this have to do with my mother?”

Margaret turned toward her.

“Elizabeth found him.”

Silence.

“Twelve years ago, your mother discovered financial payments leaving Whitmore accounts.”

“The money went to Adrian's father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret's breathing changed.

“Because he wanted out.”

Adrian stared.

“Out of what?”

“The family.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe my father abandoned me?”

Margaret looked at him.

“He didn't just leave you.”

Her voice became quieter.

“He took money.”

“How much?”

“More than eighty million dollars.”

Emily almost could not process the number.

Margaret continued.

“Elizabeth found the transfers.”

Adrian asked:

“And Grandfather?”

“He found out too.”

“What happened?”

Margaret looked toward Emily.

“Your mother gave him the records.”

Emily felt pride and grief at once.

Margaret continued.

“Your grandfather tried to recover the money. He wanted charges filed. Publicly.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“And you stopped him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because scandal would have collapsed the company.”

There it was again.

The company.

The name.

The wealth.

Always more important than the people harmed protecting it.

Emily shook her head.

“So my mother was destroyed because she discovered your husband's theft.”

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Partly.”

Emily narrowed her eyes.

“Partly?”

Margaret looked away.

Adrian noticed.

“What else?”

No answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What aren't you telling us?”

Margaret's hand trembled so violently that tea spilled over the edge of her intact cup.

For the first time, she looked no different from Emily had looked on the floor.

Afraid.

Cornered.

Powerless.

Then she spoke.

“Elizabeth didn't just discover the transfers.”

Emily waited.

“She discovered your father wasn't stealing alone.”

Adrian went still.

“Who helped him?”

Margaret looked toward the secondary suited man at the doorway.

Everyone turned.

The man remained silent.

Then he slowly reached inside his coat.

Not for a weapon.

For a key.

A small black key card.

He placed it on the table.

Adrian stared at him.

“What is that?”

The man finally spoke.

“The private elevator access to the hidden service level beneath this penthouse.”

Emily looked at Margaret.

She had lived and worked here for a year.

She had never heard of another floor.

The man continued.

“Your mother found the records there.”

May you like

Then he looked directly at Emily.

“And something else has been waiting there for you since the day she disappeared.”
