Chapter 2 - Sanctuary and Suspicion

The Moretti compound in the hills of Bedford, New York, did not look like a gangster’s hideout. It was a sprawling, multi-million-dollar colonial estate surrounded by centuries-old oak trees, manicured lawns, and a state-of-the-art security grid that could monitor a sparrow crossing the perimeter fence. For Gabriel, it was the only place on earth where the dark world he ruled could not touch the one thing he loved.

By 5:00 AM, the estate's private medical suite—a fully equipped, sterile clinic built into the reinforced basement level—was operational. Dr. Robert Harrison, a former chief of surgery who had been on the Moretti payroll for a decade, was already adjusting Daniel's intravenous lines.

"The oxygen deprivation was brief, Gabriel," Dr. Harrison said, sliding his stethoscope into his pocket as he looked over the digital charts. "The young woman’s intervention was the variable that saved him. If those men had held the pillow down for another sixty seconds, the neurological damage would have been irreversible. His heart is stable for now, but he needs absolute quiet."

Gabriel stood by the reinforced glass partition, his hands in his pockets, his eyes fixed on his sleeping son. "And the girl?"

"She’s in the secondary recovery room. Three stitches to the eyebrow, a severe contusion on her right shoulder, and mild shock. She’s physically stable, Gabriel, but she’s terrified. She keeps asking if she’s under arrest."

Gabriel turned away from the glass, his face settling into a mask of cold, analytical focus. "She’s not under arrest. But she isn't leaving this house until I know exactly how two assassins managed to walk into a secure pediatric wing with my son's schedule in their pockets."

He walked down the carpeted hallway to the secondary room. Two of his personal guards stood outside the mahogany door, their faces expressionless. Gabriel pushed the door open without knocking.

Elena Cruz sat on the edge of the examination table, wearing a clean, oversized white shirt that belonged to one of the estate’s staff members. Her face was scrubbed clean of the blood, but the dark, purplish bruising around her eyebrow and jaw had blossomed into full view under the crisp LED lights. She looked tiny, swallowed by the expensive furniture and the heavy silence of the mansion.

She jumped slightly when Gabriel entered, her hands instinctively clutching the edge of the mattress.

"Mr. Moretti," she said, her voice small but steady. "Is the little boy... is Daniel okay?"

Gabriel stopped a few feet from her, his presence occupying the entire room. He didn't answer immediately. He studied her—the way her shoulders slouched, the lack of defensive posture, the genuine, unforced anxiety in her eyes when she spoke his son's name.

"He's alive because of you," Gabriel said quietly. He pulled a chair over, turning it around and sitting astride it, his arms resting on the back. "Which means I owe you a debt, Elena. In my world, a debt to the Moretti family can buy you a new life, a new house, or enough money to never look at a mop bucket again. But it also means you are now a variable in a very dangerous equation."

Elena let out a dry, humorless laugh that ended in a soft wince as her bruised jaw protested. "I don't want a new life, Mr. Moretti. I have a mother who needs her prescription medication every Tuesday, and I have a rent payment due on an apartment in Queens in four days. If I don't show up for my shift tonight, Vanguard Facility Management is going to fire me, and my supervisor doesn't care about assassins or mafia bosses."

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You walked into a room with two armed men who were actively murdering a child. Most people would have run to the breakroom and locked the door. Why did you fight?"

Elena looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the neat white stitches above her eye.

"Because he was little," she whispered, her voice cracking with an old, deep-seated grief that Gabriel recognized instantly. "When I was twelve, my little brother Luis died in a clinic in El Salvador because the local gangs wouldn't let the doctor’s truck pass through the checkpoint without a tax. I watched him suffocate, Mr. Moretti. I know what that sound sounds like. When I walked into Room 412 and saw that man’s hand over Daniel’s face... I didn't see a billionaire’s son. I just saw Luis. And I swore to God I wouldn't run away again."

The silence that followed was heavy, filled only with the distant, rhythmic hum of the estate’s generator. Gabriel looked at her, and for the first time in five years—since the day his wife had been taken from him in a car bombing in Palermo—the icy armor around his chest cracked just a fraction. This woman wasn't a plant. She wasn't an inside operative sent by the Marcone family or the Russian crews from Brighton Beach. She was just a fragment of pure, unadulterated human decency that had accidentally collided with his dark reality.

The door opened softly, and Vincent Kane stepped into the room, his face grim. He held a high-encrypted satellite tablet in his hand.

"Boss," Vincent said, his eyes flicking briefly to Elena before locking onto Gabriel. "We found the leak. It wasn't the hospital staff. It was the transport company that handled Daniel’s medical records transfer from the private clinic in Ojai. One of the digital dispatchers just bought a house in Miami with cash."

Gabriel stood up slowly, the warmth that had briefly touched his eyes vanishing into absolute zero. "Who paid him, Vincent?"

May you like

"The Brooklyn crew," Vincent replied, his jaw clenching. "The Marcone family. They didn't want a peace treaty at Le Jardin, Gabriel. They wanted you distracted while they cut the throat of your lineage."

Gabriel walked to the door, then paused, looking back over his shoulder at Elena. "You stay here, Elena. Your rent is paid. Your mother’s medication will be delivered by a private courier within an hour. You are under the protection of the Moretti family now. Which means until I finish this... you are the safest woman in New York."
