Chapter 2 - Locker 317

Arthur did not sleep.

At 2:13 in the morning, Maya and Ethan were finally upstairs.

Arthur sat alone at the kitchen island.

Elena’s letter rested in front of him.

He had read it seventeen times.

The message never changed.

If Victoria Whitmore ever learns what is inside locker 317, Maya and Ethan will not be safe.

Trust no one from the Whitmore family.

Not even Victoria.

Especially Victoria.

Arthur stared at the last sentence.

Especially Victoria.

Elena had died fourteen months before Arthur married her.

How could she have known?

His phone vibrated.

VICTORIA.

He ignored it.

Another call came immediately.

CHARLES WHITMORE.

Arthur stared at the name.

He answered.

“Arthur.”

Charles sounded calm.

Too calm.

“I understand there has been an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

Arthur leaned back.

“Your daughter attacked two children.”

“I heard a different version.”

“I don’t care.”

Charles paused.

“Victoria is emotional.”

“So am I.”

“Be careful with emotion.”

Arthur smiled without humor.

“Is that advice?”

“It’s experience.”

Arthur looked at the brass key.

Charles continued.

“My daughter tells me those children were searching through private areas of your home.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“She told you that?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Arthur looked at the clock.

2:16 a.m.

Victoria had barely been gone four hours.

“What exactly did she tell you?”

“That they stole something.”

Arthur remained silent.

Charles waited.

Then he asked the question Arthur had been expecting.

“Did they?”

There it was.

Arthur picked up the key.

“Why do you care?”

“I don’t.”

“You called me at two in the morning.”

“Because my daughter is devastated.”

“Then comfort your daughter.”

Arthur prepared to end the call.

Charles spoke again.

“Arthur.”

Something in his voice changed.

“If those children took something that doesn’t belong to them, return it.”

Arthur slowly lowered the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

“You heard me.”

“No.”

Arthur’s voice became cold.

“I want to hear you say exactly what you think they took.”

Silence.

Then Charles laughed.

“Good night, Arthur.”

The call ended.

Arthur remained motionless.

Now he knew.

Charles knew about the key.

Or the envelope.

Possibly both.

At 6:30 the next morning, Arthur called the only person he trusted with Elena’s letter.

Daniel Reeves.

Daniel had been Arthur’s attorney for fifteen years.

By 7:20, Daniel was sitting in Arthur’s study.

He read the letter twice.

“This is Elena’s handwriting?”

“Absolutely.”

Daniel examined the key.

“317 could be anything.”

“Storage locker.”

“Bank box.”

“Train station.”

“Private vault.”

Arthur nodded.

Daniel turned the key over.

There was a tiny logo near the base.

He took a photograph.

“Give me an hour.”

It took twenty-three minutes.

Daniel returned from his phone call looking disturbed.

“It belongs to Harrington Central Station.”

Arthur frowned.

“The old train station?”

“They have private long-term storage lockers beneath the east terminal.”

Arthur stood.

“Let’s go.”

Daniel didn’t move.

“Arthur.”

“What?”

“You received a threat from Charles Whitmore four hours ago.”

“So?”

“So we don’t walk blindly into a place Elena specifically connected to danger.”

Arthur looked toward the ceiling.

Maya and Ethan were upstairs.

“You stay here with them.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Daniel.”

“If this is what I think it is, those kids need someone who isn’t connected to you.”

Arthur frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Victoria is your wife.”

“Not for long.”

“She is still legally your wife.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“If she wants access to your accounts, property, communications, or household records, marriage gives her opportunities.”

Arthur felt sick.

“You think she married me because of Elena?”

“I think we don’t know anything yet.”

They arranged private security for Maya and Ethan.

Then Arthur and Daniel drove downtown.

Harrington Central Station had been partially abandoned for years.

The underground locker level smelled like concrete and rust.

Rows of metal doors stretched beneath fluorescent lights.

They found 317.

Arthur inserted the key.

It turned.

Inside sat a black document case.

Nothing else.

Daniel photographed it before Arthur touched it.

Arthur pulled the case out.

There was no lock.

He opened it.

Inside were financial statements.

Photographs.

A flash drive.

A sealed DNA laboratory envelope.

And a handwritten notebook.

Arthur picked up the photographs first.

The first showed Elena leaving a restaurant.

The second showed Elena entering a parking garage.

The third made Arthur stop.

Victoria was standing beside Elena.

Arthur stared.

The date printed on the photograph was three years before Arthur had supposedly met Victoria.

Daniel saw it.

“That’s impossible.”

Arthur flipped to the next photograph.

Victoria and Elena were arguing.

Another photograph showed Charles Whitmore nearby.

Another showed Elena getting into a car.

Charles was watching.

Arthur’s hands started trembling.

“She knew them.”

Daniel said nothing.

Arthur opened the notebook.

Elena’s handwriting filled every page.

Dates.

Names.

Account numbers.

Payments.

Whitmore Holdings appeared repeatedly.

Then Arthur saw his own company.

Asteron Development.

He turned another page.

A payment of $4.8 million had moved from a Whitmore shell corporation into an Asteron subsidiary.

Arthur had never authorized it.

Another page.

$7.2 million.

Another.

$11 million.

Daniel whispered.

“Arthur.”

“I see it.”

Someone had been using Arthur’s companies.

For years.

Then Daniel picked up the DNA envelope.

His expression changed.

“Arthur.”

Arthur turned.

Daniel handed it to him.

The laboratory report was six years old.

Arthur opened it.

He read the names.

Maya Carter.

Ethan Carter.

Then he read the third name.

Arthur Bennett.

His heart stopped.

Probability of biological paternity:

99.9987%.

Arthur stared at the number.

He read it again.

Then again.

Daniel stepped backward.

“Arthur…”

Arthur couldn’t hear him.

His knees almost gave way.

May you like

Maya and Ethan were not simply Elena’s children.

They were his.
