Chapter 2: Masks of Elegance

Victoria smoothed the front of her shimmering dress, recovering her composure with a practiced, chilly breath. She adjusted her diamond cuff and offered Julian a weary, sympathetic smile that did not reach her eyes. “Julian, darling, don’t look at me like that,” she said softly, smoothing a blonde lock behind her ear. “Your mother was simply confused. She was reaching for the cane so abruptly I thought she might slip from her chair. I was merely trying to keep her safe.”
Clara kept her head high, holding the wooden walking cane firmly behind her back. “That is not what happened, Mr. Vance,” Clara said quietly, her tone measured despite her racing heart. “Mrs. Vance was pressing your mother about the study keys. She was trying to force Mrs. Eleanor’s fingers open.”
“That is an absolute lie!” Victoria shot back, her calm cracking momentarily as she glared at the maid. “You are a hired servant, Clara. You do not address my husband with such insolent fabrications. Julian, this house has become completely unmanageable. Your mother’s memory is failing, and Clara is feeding her paranoia. For all our sakes, we need to consider proper professional care facilities.”
Julian stood up slowly to his full height. His countenance was unreadable, but the muscle ticking in his jaw revealed his internal struggle. He had loved Victoria for six years, admiring her sharpness and grace, but over the past few months, the warmth in their home had been replaced by an unsettling coldness.
He turned to Clara and extended his right hand. “May I have the cane, please?”
Clara hesitated for a second, glancing at Eleanor. The elderly woman gave a slight, reassuring nod. Clara passed the heavy oak cane to Julian. His fingers wrapped around the smooth wooden grain. It was his father’s cane, an heirloom that Eleanor kept by her side every day since her late husband’s passing three years ago. Julian felt its substantial weight, noting how curiously heavy the upper handle felt compared to the rest of the polished shaft.

“Victoria,” Julian said, his voice quiet but absolute. “Go upstairs to the study. We will speak about this privately in a few minutes.”
Victoria opened her mouth to object, but seeing the rigid boundary in Julian’s posture, she turned sharply, her metallic dress swishing softly as she walked toward the grand staircase.
