Chapter 4 - WHAT DONNA BROUGHT TO THE BALLROOM
Donna’s missing handbag was found in the hotel’s service office after an employee reported that Vivian had asked for it to be stored “until the confused older guest calmed down.”
The copies inside remained intact.
They included the forged guarantee, VLM Advisory invoices and a letter Garrett had drafted to North Pine accusing me of interfering in company decisions because our marriage was failing.
The letter had not yet been sent.
It described me as emotionally unstable, financially controlling and unable to separate marital resentment from investment judgment.
Garrett had been preparing to discredit me before I revealed my connection to North Pine.
Donna had discovered the documents because Vivian left them inside an unlocked portfolio after a lunch at our house. Donna photographed the pages and contacted Nadia without telling me.
“You went behind my back,” I said.
“I thought you would defend him again.”
The accusation hurt because it was fair.
Garrett had belittled Donna in quieter ways for years. He called her hometown “the sticks,” corrected her table manners and once asked her not to speak during an investor dinner because her stories were “too small-town.”
I challenged him in private but continued bringing him to family events.
I told Donna he was under pressure.
I had protected my marriage from the consequences of his character.
She had stopped trusting me to protect her.
Still, Donna had hidden something too.
She had recognized VLM Advisory’s name months earlier because Vivian once asked her to authorize a donation from the Vance Foundation to the same company. Donna refused after learning it had no employees.
Instead of informing the foundation’s compliance office, she confronted Vivian privately and accepted an explanation about a bookkeeping mistake.
“Why?” I asked.
“She said exposing it would embarrass Garrett and you.”
“So you protected the family image.”
Donna looked at her injured wrist.
“I suppose I taught you how.”
The documents also contained a recent bank instruction transferring $310,000 from Lattice Harbor to VLM Advisory.
The stated purpose was christening-event sponsorship and political outreach.
The transfer occurred the morning of the reception.
Vivian had not merely insulted Donna because she disliked her background. She knew Donna had discovered the payment and intended to show the papers to me before Garrett announced Project Meridian to the investors.
Vivian’s cruelty was meant to drive her out of the ballroom.
Garrett kicked the chair after Donna refused to surrender the handbag.
The humiliation had been public.
Its motive was financial.
Then Nadia called.
The auditors had located a personal tax statement delivered accidentally to Garrett’s office eighteen months earlier. It identified me as North Pine’s controlling beneficiary.
