Chapter 9 - THE VISIT VIVIAN TRIED TO ENTER

Vivian appeared at Oliver’s daycare the following Monday.

She wore a cream coat, carried a wrapped box and told the front-desk administrator she had come for her grandson’s family lunch.

There was no family lunch.

Her name did not appear on the approved-contact list.

When the administrator refused to let her enter the classroom, Vivian produced a copy of the trust certificate and claimed she was Oliver’s financial guardian.

The daycare director called me.

Then she called the police because Vivian would not leave the lobby.

No arrest followed. Vivian eventually walked outside after officers explained that a financial document did not authorize contact with a child.

She left the gift behind.

Inside was a silver train engraved with Oliver’s initials and the name HARBOR NORTH.

Celia advised me to preserve it.

Garrett called through the parenting app.

I didn’t know she was going there.

I replied:

Did you tell her where he attends daycare?

His answer arrived twelve minutes later.

Months ago.

That was not enough.

The caseworker suspended his next visit until the evaluator could determine whether he had helped Vivian approach Oliver.

Garrett requested an immediate meeting.

This time, Celia attended.

“I didn’t send her,” he said. “I haven’t spoken to her in three weeks.”

“What happened three weeks ago?” Celia asked.

“I told her I was going to disclose the trust.”

I looked at him.

“You told me you thought Meridian was never completed.”

“I did think that.”

“Then what were you going to disclose?”

“That the trust existed.”

Celia leaned forward.

“Why now?”

Garrett rubbed the edge of his wedding-ring finger, though the ring was long gone.

“My counselor asked me to list every situation where I allowed fear to become secrecy.”

“And the trust was on that list?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell your probation officer?”

“I asked my attorney first.”

“What did your attorney say?”

“To gather the documents.”

Vivian controlled them.

According to Garrett, she had moved from her San Francisco condo to a furnished rental in Marin County after selling property to fund the VLM repayment. She claimed the trust was Oliver’s only remaining protection from the Vance family.

“She said Evelyn will raise him to believe you were only a criminal who borrowed her money,” Garrett said.

“You assaulted my mother,” I replied. “You forged my signature. Those are not beliefs I invented.”

“I know.”

He did not add but.

That was new.

Celia asked whether he had received income from Harbor North Labs.

“No.”

“Did you expect to?”

Garrett hesitated.

“I expected to manage the patents when Oliver was older.”

“You expected control.”

“I expected to build something he could inherit.”

“With technology eighty-six employees created.”

“I thought the company would be taken from me.”

“The company was never solely yours.”

His jaw tightened, but he did not argue.

The evaluator reinstated supervised visits after confirming that Garrett had not directed Vivian to the daycare. He was ordered not to share Oliver’s location, schedule or photographs with her.

He agreed.

The trust dispute continued.

Nadia assigned Lattice Harbor’s director of platform security, Leah Moreno, to reconstruct Project Meridian’s technical history.

Leah had joined the company during its first year. She was one of the engineers who turned Garrett’s original prototype into a commercial product.

She entered the boardroom carrying three binders and the expression of someone who had been asked to forgive too many things because a founder once had an idea.

“The code transfer did not happen in one event,” she said. “It happened in fragments.”

Project Meridian engineers had copied software modules into an external repository over eight months. Some believed Harbor North was a future Lattice subsidiary. Others were told the move had board approval.

The access logs used Garrett’s executive credentials.

A second device approved the transfers.

Vivian’s consulting laptop.

Leah placed an email on the screen.

Garrett had written:

Use the trust structure. Nobody will challenge an asset belonging to my son.

The email was dated three days before Oliver’s birth.

Garrett had not merely signed an education document.

He had understood exactly why his child’s name was useful.
