The Girl in the Marble Hall

Chapter 01 - The Girl in the Marble Hall

Ethan Cole had not entered the Whitmore estate in three years. The last time he stood beneath its crystal chandelier, his wife, Elena, had vanished before sunrise, leaving behind her wedding ring and a note saying she needed to disappear. Everyone believed she had abandoned him and their six-year-old daughter, Lily.

Ethan never believed it.

On the morning the estate was scheduled to be sold, Ethan arrived with two private investigators and a court order allowing him to collect Lily’s belongings. Elena’s older brother, Victor Whitmore, had controlled the property since her disappearance. He claimed Lily was staying with relatives and warned Ethan not to cause a scene.

Then a little girl in a pale pink dress ran barefoot across the marble hall.

“Daddy!”

Ethan dropped to one knee as Lily crashed into his arms. She was thinner than he remembered, and fear shook her small body. Victor’s security men appeared at the staircase, but Ethan’s investigators stepped between them.

“Where have you been?” Ethan whispered.

Lily looked toward the men and lowered her voice. “Uncle Victor said you stopped looking for us.”

“Us?”

Her eyes filled with tears. She took Ethan’s hand and pulled him toward the center of the hall. “Mommy told me to find you when the house got quiet.”

Ethan froze. “Lily, Mommy is gone.”

“No,” she said. “She’s under the floor.”

The child led him to a nearly invisible seam between two marble tiles. From her pocket, she removed a tiny brass key. Ethan recognized it immediately. It had once hung from Elena’s necklace, though she had never told him what it opened.

Lily knelt beside a gold-colored lock embedded in the floor. Her fingers trembled too badly to turn the key, so Ethan covered her hand with his.

Behind them, Victor shouted from the staircase. “Get away from there!”

That was all the confirmation Ethan needed.

The lock clicked. A concealed wooden door lifted from the marble, revealing stone steps descending into darkness. Cold air rose from below, carrying the faint sound of someone breathing.

Victor’s security men moved forward. Ethan’s investigators blocked them while one called the police.

Lily pointed into the opening. “She told me not to cry because you would come.”

Ethan switched on his phone’s flashlight and descended. At the bottom, he saw a woman sitting against a stone wall, her wrists bruised and her face pale.

She raised her eyes.

“Ethan?” Elena whispered.

For three years, he had imagined what he would say if he found her.

But when he saw the terror on her face, only one question came out.

“Who did this to you?”
