Chapter 03 - The Lie That Owned the Estate
Before Victor could seize the recorder, Lily threw it down the stairs. Elena caught it against her chest. At the same moment, Ethan’s investigator, Marcus Reed, triggered the estate’s fire alarm from his phone. Every interior lock released automatically.
The front gates opened, and sirens cut through the grounds.
Victor ran toward his office. Ethan knew he was not fleeing the police; he was going after the records explaining why Elena had been imprisoned.
Paramedics carried Elena upstairs while Lily stayed beside her. Elena gripped Ethan’s sleeve.
“Behind our father’s portrait,” she whispered. “There’s a black ledger. Don’t let him burn it.”
Ethan and Marcus raced through the mansion. Smoke drifted from the study. Victor had poured lighter fluid across stacks of contracts and held the black ledger in one hand.
“You think rescuing her changes anything?” Victor said. “The company belongs to me on paper.”
“It never belonged to you,” Ethan answered.
Victor struck a match.
Marcus knocked the ledger from his hand. Ethan kicked it away from the flames as officers entered. Victor tried to escape through a private stairwell, but detectives were waiting below.
The fire was contained quickly. Inside the ledger, investigators found payments to doctors, guards, and a document examiner who had created Elena’s false medical history. Bank records showed Victor moving company money into accounts controlled by the buyer purchasing the estate.
But one discovery hurt Elena more than the others.
Her mother, Margaret, had signed a guardianship paper giving Victor control over Lily.
At the hospital, Margaret arrived crying. She admitted Victor had told her Elena was dangerous and that Lily would enter foster care unless she signed. He supported the lie with fabricated videos and medical reports.
Elena listened quietly. “You never came downstairs. You never looked for me.”
Margaret had no answer.
Then a detective delivered troubling news. Lily’s recorder had been damaged in the struggle. Its newest audio could not be recovered immediately, and Victor’s attorneys claimed Elena had entered the cellar voluntarily during a mental health crisis.
Without his confession, the case depended on physical evidence and Elena’s testimony.
That evening, a news report described Victor as a respected businessman accused by his “emotionally unstable sister.”
Elena turned away from the television.
Ethan took her hand. “He built his power on people doubting you.”
