Chapter 1 - THE BOY IN THE FIRE

The first scream came through the flames.
“Evelyn!” Noah Whitmore shouted from the second floor. “Please!”
The east wing of Whitmore House burned like a giant furnace. Windows burst outward. Black smoke rolled across the lawn where the entire Whitmore family stood wrapped in blankets, staring at the mansion as if it were already a grave.
Everyone had escaped.
Charles Whitmore, the billionaire patriarch. Victoria, Noah’s stepmother. Uncle Grant and his wife. Twelve dinner guests. Six security guards. Even the golden retriever trembled safely in a gardener’s arms.
But Noah was still inside.
Evelyn Brooks ran toward the front steps. Victoria grabbed her wrist so hard her rings cut into Evelyn’s skin.
“Don’t go back,” Victoria snapped. “The east wing is gone.”
Then Noah screamed again.
Evelyn tore free, wrapped her apron over her mouth, and charged into the burning mansion.
Heat slammed into her. The foyer chandelier crashed behind her, blocking the entrance. She climbed the service stairs because the marble staircase was already on fire. Each breath tasted like metal and ash.
“Noah!”
“Here!”
His voice came from the old nursery corridor.
Evelyn reached his bedroom and stopped cold.
Noah was not simply trapped.
His wheelchair had been dragged away from the bed. The emergency transfer board was missing. The window had been nailed shut from the outside. And a thick leather restraint had been buckled around his waist, securing him to the bedframe.
Noah’s face was wet with tears.
“Victoria said it was for my safety,” he coughed. “Then she locked the door.”
Evelyn grabbed the buckle, but it would not release. Someone had jammed the metal clasp with a screw.
A section of ceiling crashed into the hallway.
“Listen to me,” Evelyn said, fighting panic. “I am getting you out.”
Noah shook his head toward the desk. “Take the blue folder first.”
“What?”
“My dad hid it. Victoria found it tonight.”
Another explosion shook the room.
Evelyn pulled open the desk drawer. Inside was a blue leather folder stamped with the Whitmore family seal—and a document labeled LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT.
At the bottom of the first page, one line had been circled in red:

Upon Noah Whitmore’s eighteenth birthday, controlling ownership transfers to him.
Outside, someone locked the bedroom door from the hallway.
