Chapter 14 - THE LAST THREAT
Evelyn stood ten feet away, hands visible.
“Noah has already transferred emergency control to an independent court trustee,” she said. “Hurting him gives you nothing.”
Charles pressed the glass closer. “You’re lying.”
Noah looked at Evelyn. He was scared, but he understood.
Three taps sounded against his armrest.
Ready.
Evelyn kept Charles talking. “You burned your home. You killed the woman who gave you a family. You killed Daniel because he was better than you.”
Charles’s face twisted. “Daniel was weak.”
“He ran into a fire for his son when Noah was two. You stood on a lawn and listened to that same boy scream.”
Noah suddenly released his chair’s locking lever and drove backward into Charles’s knee. The glass fell.
Evelyn lunged, pulled Noah away, and kicked the shard beneath a bench.
Charles grabbed her by the throat, but the courtroom doors burst open. Ortiz and two deputies tackled him.
As they dragged him away, Charles shouted, “You are nothing! You scrubbed my floors!”
Evelyn looked straight at him.
“And I found every stain you tried to hide.”
The jury returned verdicts two days later.
Charles was convicted of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, arson, financial fraud, and obstruction. Victoria and Grant were convicted on multiple charges. Pike and Celia received reduced sentences for cooperation.
Whitmore Global’s board voted unanimously to remove every member of Charles’s faction.
The pension money was restored with penalties. Victoria’s charities were placed under investigation. The estate’s remaining assets were transferred into Noah’s protected trust.
But Noah had one final decision.
Whitmore House could be rebuilt exactly as it had been.
Architects presented drawings of restored ballrooms, marble stairs, and private wings.
Noah studied them, then tore the plans in half.
“No,” he said. “Build something they would have hated.”
Evelyn smiled. “What do you have in mind?”
