Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE MARBLE FLOOR
Charlotte Vale’s shoulder struck the marble hard enough to steal the air from her lungs.
Bianca Laurent tightened her grip around Charlotte’s wrist and dragged her another three feet across the lobby.
The hem of Bianca’s white silk gown floated behind her like a royal cape.
Her diamond earrings flashed beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Charlotte’s faded black tank top had torn near the shoulder.
Her jeans were dusty from the maintenance tunnel she had crawled through less than twenty minutes earlier.
To the wealthy guests gathered beneath the chandeliers, the scene seemed obvious.
Bianca was removing an intruder.
Charlotte was a poor woman who had entered a place where she did not belong.
No one knew Charlotte had designed the floral emblem carved into the center of the marble floor when she was fourteen.
No one knew her mother had once stood in that exact spot and promised that the Solmere Hotel would someday belong to her.
Bianca stopped beside the revolving doors and released Charlotte’s wrist.
“Throw her outside,” Bianca ordered.
Two security guards moved forward.
Charlotte remained on the floor.
She did not beg.
She did not cry.
She looked past Bianca toward Adrian Cross, the hotel’s general manager.
Adrian stood near the reception desk in a charcoal suit.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
Charlotte had seen that same expression in a photograph taken three days before her mother’s fatal car accident.
Adrian had been standing beside Charlotte’s uncle, Conrad Vale.
They had both claimed they barely knew each other.
Charlotte slowly wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth.
“Before you throw me out, ask Mr. Cross why Camera Seventeen was turned off at 9:14 this morning.”
A ripple of confusion passed through the lobby.
Adrian’s face did not change.
“Remove her,” he said.
Charlotte glanced toward the ceiling.
“Camera Seventeen covers the private records corridor.”
Bianca laughed.
“You expect us to believe a homeless thief knows the hotel’s security system?”
“I know more than the security system.”
Charlotte pushed herself onto one knee.
“I know what was removed from the records corridor at 9:16.”
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the tablet in his hand.
Bianca stepped closer.
“What did you take?”
Charlotte looked directly at her.
“That is not the question you should be asking.”
Bianca’s smile disappeared.
Charlotte turned toward the elderly concierge standing behind the brass luggage cart.
Elias Boone had worked for the Vale family for thirty-seven years.
His face had gone pale the instant he saw Charlotte.
He took one trembling step forward.
Adrian noticed.
“Elias, return to your station.”
Elias ignored him.
His eyes fell to the silver ring on Charlotte’s right hand.
The ring had belonged to Eleanor Vale.
Elias’s lips parted.
“My God.”
The room became silent again.
Elias removed his hat.
May you like
Then he bowed his head in front of the woman lying on the floor.
“Welcome home, Miss Vale.”
