Chapter 11 - TWO HANDS ON THE DOOR
The heat grew stronger behind Charlotte.
Smoke gathered beneath the tunnel ceiling.
Daniel remained unconscious near the maintenance hatch.
Nora pressed a damp cloth over his mouth.
Mason’s voice crackled through Charlotte’s receiver, but the signal was broken.
Conrad pointed toward the vault.
“One hand from each surviving branch of the Vale family.”
Charlotte placed her palm against the silver plate.
Conrad placed his hand beside hers.
The machine scanned their fingerprints.
“Genetic authorization confirmed.”
A second panel opened.
“Founder’s oath required.”
Conrad looked at Charlotte.
She understood why he had never opened the vault.
He did not know the oath.
Eleanor had taught it only to Charlotte.
Conrad pressed the pistol against Bianca’s shoulder.
“Speak.”
Charlotte looked into her uncle’s eyes.
“Fortune serves truth.”
The steel mechanisms unlocked.
The circular door slowly turned.
Cold air escaped from the vault.
Inside were shelves of sealed documents, metal boxes, paintings, and ledgers.
At the center stood a glass case containing two certificates.
One represented fifty-one percent of the Solmere voting shares.
The other was Eleanor’s original trust.
Conrad shoved Charlotte aside.
He entered the vault with Roland.
Adrian kept his pistol aimed at the others.
Conrad removed the share certificate.
His smile faded.
A red stamp crossed the page.
NONTRANSFERABLE EXCEPT TO CHARLOTTE ELEANOR VALE.
Roland seized the trust document.
He read the first page.
“You told me the shares would pass to the board.”
“They were supposed to.”
“The trust names Charlotte as sole beneficiary.”
Conrad snatched the papers.
“The death certificate should have activated the secondary clause.”
Charlotte stepped inside.
“My mother removed the clause.”
Conrad tore through the pages.
The final section contained a handwritten note.
My brother will destroy everything he cannot possess.
Charlotte must never mistake blood for loyalty.
Conrad crushed the paper in his fist.
Roland turned toward the exit.
“This deal is finished.”
Adrian aimed his weapon at him.
“No one is leaving.”
Roland froze.
Bianca stared at Adrian.
“You work for my father.”
Adrian laughed.
“I worked for whoever paid me.”
He shifted the gun toward Conrad.
“Then I began keeping my own records.”
Charlotte realized Adrian had never planned to save Conrad or Roland.
He intended to let the fire erase all three families while he escaped with the money.
Adrian took a small metal box from the vault.
He backed toward the tunnel.
Conrad lunged at him.
The gun fired.
Roland collapsed.
Bianca screamed and rushed toward her father.
Adrian locked the vault door controls from the outside.
The steel circle began closing.
Charlotte ran toward the narrowing opening.

Adrian smiled through the gap.
“Let the rightful owners be buried with their empire.”
