Chapter 10: The Unraveling Web

The tablet screen glowed in the dim hallway of the detention center, casting a cold blue light over Julian’s rigid features. The silent video loop played again, showing Richard Vance stepping away from the study door at 11:17 PM, clutching the master key ring and sliding a small silicone thumbprint mold into the pocket of his trousers. The damning evidence was crisp, undeniable, and utterly devastating.

“Richard,” Julian whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. Richard Vance was not only his corporate second-in-command at Sterling Enterprises, but he was also married to Julian’s sister, Cynthia, though their marriage had been notoriously rocky for years due to Richard’s mounting gambling debts and aggressive corporate ambitions.

Marcus Vance stared at the screen, his face turning an unhealthy shade of gray as he recognized his own nephew by marriage. “Sweet merciful heavens. Richard? Why would Richard want to frame Clara and steal the Victorian brooch?”

“It’s not just about the brooch, Marcus,” Julian said, a cold analytical clarity taking over his shock. “Sterling Enterprises is currently voting on a major board restructuring next month. My mother controls forty percent of the voting shares through her personal trust. Richard has been pushing her for months to sign over her proxy voting rights to him under the guise of estate management.”

“And if Clara was convicted of a major theft on the estate—proven through gross negligence or lack of household security overseen by executive management—it would create a massive scandal,” David Reyes added, finishing the thought logically. “It would force the Sterling board to invoke emergency governance clauses, stripping Julian of his executive control and handing operational power directly to the senior vice president—Richard Vance.”

“He manufactured a crisis to usurp control of the company,” Marcus said, slamming his fist lightly against the wall in sheer frustration. “He used a priceless family heirloom as a pawn in a corporate coup, and he was willing to ruin an innocent woman’s life and orphan two young boys to do it.”

Julian straightened up, his eyes hardening into a cold, unbreakable resolve. The sadness he had felt earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, righteous anger. “We are going back to the mansion right now. David, save those video files to three separate encrypted drives and cloud backups. Marcus, call Judge Whitaker and get an emergency writ of habeas corpus and an immediate injunction for Richard’s arrest based on newly discovered exculpatory evidence and video proof of evidence tampering.”

“Done,” Marcus said, pulling his phone out instantly. “I’ll have the paperwork ready for a judge’s signature within the hour. But Julian, what about your mother? When she sees this video, it’s going to break her heart. She trusts Richard implicitly.”

“My mother’s misplaced trust is what allowed this nightmare to happen in the first place,” Julian replied firmly, turning toward the exit where Leo and Toby were waiting patiently by the plastic chairs. “It’s time she learned the truth about the man she invited into our home.”
