Chapter 9: The Security Log Breakthrough

The visitation booth felt suffocatingly small as Julian, Marcus, and David huddled around the glass partition, listening to Clara recount every detail of her evening before the police arrived. She explained how she had put Toby and Leo to bed at 8:30 PM, graded some spelling notebooks at her kitchen table until ten, and then gone straight to sleep without hearing a single sound outside. She had no enemies among the staff, no debts, and no access to the high-value jewelry kept in the main house safes.

“Thank you, Clara. Hang in there just a little longer. Marcus will handle the magistrate judge in the morning, and we’ll have you out on bail by noon tomorrow at the latest,” Julian promised, setting the heavy telephone receiver back onto its cradle with a definitive thud.

Outside the visitation room, back in the harsh fluorescent glare of the hallway, David Reyes immediately flipped open his tablet and connected to the Sterling estate’s main security server via an encrypted satellite link.

“Alright, gentlemen, let’s look at the biometric access logs for the master study safe between 9:00 PM and midnight last night,” David muttered, his fingers flying across the virtual keyboard with practiced speed. A cascade of green alphanumeric code scrolled down the screen before resolving into a clean, chronological table of timestamps and user IDs.

Julian leaned over David’s shoulder, his heart hammering against his ribs. “Look there. 11:14 PM.”

David tapped the entry, expanding the data block. “User ID: Admin-02. Biometric scan: Verified via secondary override code. Location: Main House Study Wall Safe.”

Marcus frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. “Admin-02. Whose profile is that?”

Julian’s face went pale, the color draining from his skin as the reality of the access code hit him like a physical blow. “That’s my mother’s primary override profile. But she was asleep in her bedroom upstairs at that hour—her bedroom biometric sensor logged her in bed at 10:30 PM and didn’t register movement until 6:00 AM.”

“So either Mrs. Sterling got out of bed, accessed her own safe to frame her own housekeeper, and then went back to sleep without triggering the hallway motion sensors,” David said slowly, raising an eyebrow, “or someone else used her master administrative credentials.”

“How could someone else use her admin credentials?” Marcus asked sharply. “Those require a physical thumbprint match combined with a six-digit rolling security pin.”

“Unless,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as a terrifying possibility formed in his mind, “someone has a duplicate silicone thumbprint mold, and the rolling pin was written down somewhere accessible.”

David tapped the screen again, pulling up an auxiliary log file from the hallway security camera directly outside Eleanor Sterling’s private study. “Let’s check the corridor camera feed for that exact timestamp. 11:12 PM to 11:18 PM.”

The high-resolution video file buffered for three seconds before playing smoothly on the tablet screen. The hallway was dimly lit by wall sconces. For a moment, the corridor was entirely empty. Then, at precisely 11:14 PM, a tall figure in a tailored dark suit stepped out from the shadows near the study door, holding a small metallic key ring in one hand and pressing a silicone mold against the biometric scanner. The door clicked open silently, the figure slipped inside for three minutes, and then emerged, carefully locking the door behind them before walking swiftly down the corridor toward the guest wing.

Julian stared at the screen, his breath stopping entirely. The man in the video was not Eleanor Sterling. He was not a burglar from the outside.

It was Richard Vance, Julian’s own corporate vice president and estranged brother-in-law, who was currently staying in the mansion’s guest suite during his visit from Chicago.
