Chapter 11: The Return to the Estate

The luxury silver sedan pulled up under the grand neo-classical pillars of the Sterling estate just as the afternoon sun began to dip toward the western horizon, casting long, amber shadows across the gravel driveway. Julian turned off the engine, stepping out into the cool evening air. He opened the back door to help Leo and Toby out, keeping his hand gently on their shoulders as they walked up the marble steps toward the heavy oak doors of the mansion.

Inside the grand foyer, the atmosphere was heavy with an unnatural silence. Eleanor Sterling sat in a high-backed velvet armchair near the fireplace, sipping Earl Grey tea from a delicate porcelain cup. She wore her gold silk suit with the same rigid posture as before, though the lines around her eyes revealed the deep strain of the day’s events. As the front door opened, she looked up, expecting to see her son returning alone. Instead, she saw Julian and the two boys standing in the entryway.

“Julian? Why did you bring the children back into the main house? I told you they belong in the carriage house until this sordid business is resolved,” Eleanor said, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink against the saucer.

“Mother, we need to talk. And we need Richard down here in the study immediately,” Julian said, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no argument.

Eleanor frowned, her pearl earrings swaying slightly as she shook her head. “Richard is resting in the guest suite. He has been working late on corporate restructuring documents all day. Why on earth would you disturb him?”

Before Julian could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the grand staircase. Richard Vance appeared on the landing, wearing a relaxed navy blazer and open-collared shirt, holding a glass of scotch in his hand. He looked down at the group with a smooth, practiced smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

“Everything alright down here, Aunt Eleanor? Julian? I heard voices,” Richard asked, walking down the steps with an easy, confident stride.

Julian stepped forward, pulling his tablet out from the leather briefcase he carried. He didn’t raise his voice, but every word he spoke cut through the silence like a scalpel. “Richard, you might want to finish that drink before you look at this screen.”

Richard stopped on the bottom step, his smile faltering slightly as he caught the cold, intense glare in Julian’s dark eyes. “What are you talking about, Julian? Did you manage to post bail for your thieving maid yet?”

“Clara is innocent, Richard. And we both know who put that diamond brooch in her coat lining,” Julian said, stepping to the foot of the stairs and pressing play on the tablet screen, holding it up so that both Richard and Eleanor could see the high-definition security footage playing under the harsh light of the foyer chandelier.
