Chapter 13 - THE SHOT ON THE ICE

Richard fell.

Claire's world narrowed to the red spreading across his shoulder.

Thomas fired again, but Daniel came from behind the boathouse and knocked his arm upward. The bullet shattered a window.

"You followed me?" Thomas roared.

Daniel struck him. "I came to end this."

Federal agents rushed across the yard.

Samuel ran onto the ice, clutching the ledger pages. Thomas broke away and followed him.

The brothers-in-crime shouted at each other as they ran.

"You said the explosives were ready!" Thomas yelled.

"You said Daniel could control his wife!" Samuel shouted back.

A crack split the lake.

Both men stopped.

The ice beneath Samuel fractured first. He dropped the pages and fell waist-deep into black water. Thomas reached for him, but Samuel grabbed his coat and pulled him down too.

Agents threw rescue lines.

Claire knelt beside Richard.

"Stay with me."

He managed a weak smile. "You sound like your mother."

"Don't talk like that."

"I'm not leaving."

Daniel stood nearby, hands raised as agents surrounded him.

Thomas was pulled from the water alive. Samuel came out seconds later, coughing and furious.

The ledger pages floated across the broken ice.

Grace recovered most of them.

One page was missing.

The page that identified the final beneficiary of the scheme.

Daniel sat in the back of an agent's vehicle, wrapped in a blanket. Through the glass, he watched Claire hold pressure against Richard's wound. His face showed shame, but Claire no longer mistook shame for change. Regret could arrive after the damage. It could not erase the choice that caused it.

At the hospital, while Richard underwent surgery, Claire received an anonymous text.

A photograph appeared.

It showed the missing page.

At the bottom was Vanessa's name.
