Chapter 4 - THE LETTER FROM A DEAD WOMAN

Richard turned to Claire so fast his chair scraped the floor.
"What voting shares?"
Claire's throat tightened.
She had spent years protecting the final promise she made to her mother.
Never let Richard know until you are certain he can survive the truth.
"Mom left me something," Claire said.
Richard's face lost all color.
Evelyn smiled. "At last."
Claire looked at her. "You knew my mother?"
"Everyone who mattered knew Margaret Hale."
Richard stepped toward Evelyn. "You never met my wife."
"No," Evelyn said. "But my husband did."
Daniel's father, Thomas Cole, had supposedly died in a boating accident fifteen years earlier. He had served as legal counsel to Hale Industries before vanishing under suspicion of embezzlement.
Claire had seen his name in her mother's letter.
She reached into the hidden pocket of her dress and removed a tiny brass key.
Daniel lunged.
Richard caught him by the wrist.
"Touch her again," Richard said quietly, "and you will leave this ballroom in handcuffs."
Sirens wailed outside.
Evelyn did not seem worried. That frightened Claire more than anything.
"The key opens a deposit box at First Lakeshore Bank," Claire said. "My mother left a letter and a ledger. She said the ledger could destroy the people who betrayed her."
Richard stared at her. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she told me not to."
Pain crossed his face.
Claire hated herself for causing it, but the letter's warning had been exact.
Richard loves you. That does not mean the people around him do.
A police captain entered through the side doors with four officers.
"Richard Hale?" he called.
Richard stepped forward.
The captain did not approach Daniel.
He approached Richard.
"You're under arrest for the murder of Thomas Cole."
Gasps rolled through the ballroom.
Evelyn's smile widened.
May you like
Claire realized the gala had never been about exposing her.
It was designed to pull her father into the open.
