Chapter 2 - THE NAME SHE BURIED

Richard broke the seal.

Inside was a photograph of Claire at seventeen, standing beside him on the steps of Hale Tower. On the back, someone had written four words in red ink:

WE KNOW WHO SHE IS.

Claire closed her eyes.

For eight years, she had lived as Claire Bennett, the daughter of a school secretary and a mechanic who died young. It was a careful lie, built after kidnappers had tried to use her as leverage against Richard Hale, one of the richest and most feared corporate investigators in the country.

The public believed Richard had no children.

Claire wanted it that way.

"You hid your last name from me?" Daniel asked.

His voice held no hurt. Only calculation.

Claire heard it clearly now.

"I hid it from everyone," she said.

Evelyn moved closer. "How much are you worth?"

The question was so naked that several guests turned away in disgust.

Richard folded the photograph. "More than your son deserves to know."

Daniel set down his glass. "This is my wife. Her finances are my business."

"Her bruises are also your business," Richard replied. "Yet you seem remarkably uninformed."

Vanessa stepped between them. "This is ridiculous. Claire hit herself. She has episodes."

Claire stared at her. "You were in my bedroom last night."

Vanessa blinked.

"You came in after Daniel left," Claire continued. "You told me to sign the trust amendment. When I refused, you grabbed my arm."

Murmurs spread through the room.

Daniel's jaw tightened. "Enough."

Richard raised one finger.

The ballroom doors locked.

A screen descended behind the stage.

"No," Claire whispered. "Dad, what did you do?"

"I asked the hotel to preserve every camera angle from the last seventy-two hours."

Daniel rushed toward the control booth.

Security blocked him.

The first video appeared.

It showed Vanessa entering Claire's suite at 11:43 p.m.

She was carrying a leather folder.

She was not alone.

Daniel walked in behind her.
