Chapter 10 - The Price of Silence

“You lied to me,” Mercer said quietly to Grant, his tone terrifyingly calm. “You guaranteed those trust funds were clean of any domestic encumbrances.”

“Julian, listen to me, she’s exaggerating—” Grant stammered, reaching out a hand, but Mercer aggressively stepped back from him.

“Do not touch me,” Mercer snapped. “Security.”

Within seconds, two hotel security officers approached the group. Mercer handed his drink to a passing waiter, turned his back on Grant, and looked at my father with calculated composure.

“Mr. Vance, Ms. Vance,” Mercer said with a tight bow of his head. “Apex Sovereign Capital will be severing all ties with Mr. Whitmore immediately. Please excuse the oversight.”

As Mercer walked away, the security guards stepped up on either side of Grant.

“Sir, we’re going to have to ask you to leave the main ballroom,” one officer said quietly but firmly.

Grant looked around the room. Dozens of Dallas’s most prominent business leaders were watching. The hushed whispers were already spreading like wildfire across the tables. His mother’s legacy, his backdoor comeback, his final attempt to rebuild a shadow of his former wealth—all of it had collapsed in less than five minutes.

He looked at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with a mixture of rage and utter devastation.

“Why?” he choked out, his voice cracking under the weight of his humiliation. “You won, Claire! You took the house! You took my name off the buildings! You put me on probation! Why can’t you just let me live?!”

I stepped closer to him, stopping just inches away from where he stood flanked by security.

I didn't yell. I didn't raise my hand. I didn't even show contempt.

“Because you thought power was something you could steal back in the dark, Grant,” I said softly. “You thought if you waited long enough, people would forget what you did in the rain.”

I leaned in slightly, my voice a whisper that only he could hear.

“I don't hate you, Grant. Hating you would mean you still matter. I am simply ensuring that every time you try to build a life on top of a lie, the truth is there to knock it down.”

Grant stared at me, his mouth opening as if to speak, but no words came out. The last remnant of his fight drained away, leaving behind only the hollow shell of a man who had finally run out of excuses.

The security officers placed their hands gently on his arms and guided him away from the lights, down the long corridor toward the side exits.
