Chapter 15 - The Dinner in Turtle Creek

Two weeks later, the federal grand jury indictments against Senator Robert Vance and the executive board of Apex Sovereign Capital were sealed, waiting for a dawn raid.

I sat in a quiet, dimly lit booth at an upscale bistro in Turtle Creek, Dallas. Across from me sat Mark Lawson. He had traded his prosecutor's badge for a dark blue linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearm arms built from years of discipline.

"The wire transfers on that flash drive were bulletproof," Mark said, cutting into his steak. "Senator Vance’s career is over by Monday morning. And your Gulf Coast rail permits will be cleared by the interim committee before the month ends."

"You move fast, Prosecutor Lawson," I said, sipping my cabernet.

"Only when the cause is worth it," he replied, setting his fork down and looking straight into my eyes. The professional distance between us had melted over the past two weeks, replaced by late-night phone calls about evidence that slowly drifted into conversations about our lives, our scars, and what lay beyond the battles we fought.

"Grant Whitmore called his public defender today," Mark added softly. "When he heard the DOJ was seizing his family's remaining offshore accounts tied to the Senator, he reportedly broke down in his cell. He realizes now that even his legacy is erased."

I took a quiet breath, feeling no surge of triumph—only the deep, restful peace of a final chapter closing.

"And you, Claire?" Mark asked, leaning forward, his hand resting on the white tablecloth between us, palm open, waiting. "Are you ready to stop fighting ghosts?"

I looked at his open hand—a hand that represented protection, truth, and a future built on mutual respect rather than control. Slowly, deliberately, I reached out and rested my fingers in his. His grip was warm, strong, and steady.

"I stopped fighting ghosts the night I picked up the phone," I smiled, feeling a genuine warmth rise in my chest for the first time in years. "Now, I'm just building what comes next."
