I stood on the helipad of the newly completed Vance Freight Logistics Hub in Houston. The Texas sun was blazing bright, casting a golden light across acres of modern rail lines, automated warehouses, and fleets of electric freight trucks bearing our emblem.
Beside me stood my father, looking healthier than ever, a light wind catching his white hair. On my left stood Mark, wearing a navy suit, his hand gently holding mine in plain view of the cameras and executives gathered below.
Grant Whitmore was currently serving an eight-year sentence in a federal correctional facility in Louisiana for his role in the laundering scheme. Vanessa Cole had relocated to Oregon under a protected identity, working as a counselor for women in crisis.
My father looked out over the sprawling empire we had secured, then turned to me.
"You built something bigger than I ever could, Claire," he said softly. "I built an empire out of anger and paperwork. You built it out of justice."
"We built it together, Dad," I replied.
Mark squeezed my hand gently, leaning down to whisper, "Ready for the press conference, VP Vance?"
I looked up at the vast, cloudless Texas sky. The memory of the rain, the blood on my face, the six slaps, and the cold pavement of Highland Park felt like a distant life lived by someone else.
