Chapter 10 - The Doctor at the Marina

Divers searched the marina.
They did not find Dr. Voss.
A security camera showed him entering a private yacht owned by Marcus.
The yacht left the harbor two hours after the gala.
It returned before sunrise.
Only Marcus stepped ashore.
Captain Ortiz brought him in for questioning.
He claimed Voss asked for passage to Mexico.
He denied knowing where the doctor went after the yacht crossed international waters.
Then investigators found blood beneath the rear deck.
DNA testing matched Voss.
Marcus requested an attorney.
Conrad Mills arrived.
The same attorney who drafted Elena’s false commitment papers and Victoria’s custody order.
Captain Ortiz separated them.
Conrad insisted the blood came from an accident.
Marcus eventually admitted Voss cut his hand while climbing aboard.
The amount of blood contradicted him.
Elena’s memory card contained yacht footage downloaded from Victoria’s surveillance system.
The recording showed Marcus and Voss arguing.
Voss demanded more money.
He threatened to tell police what happened to my father.
Marcus struck him with a metal handle.
Voss fell.
The camera angle did not show whether he went overboard.
It showed Marcus cleaning the deck.
My brother watched the recording inside the interview room.
His face collapsed.
“I did not mean to kill him.”
Captain Ortiz remained still.
“Where is the body?”
Marcus pressed both hands against his eyes.
“He was alive when he fell.”
“Did you rescue him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said he would destroy us.”
“You left him in the ocean.”
Marcus began crying.
For years, Victoria had trained him to believe tears could arrive after responsibility and still change the sequence.
They could not.
He agreed to cooperate.
He revealed that Voss altered my father’s medication at Victoria’s request.
Marcus collected the pills from the clinic.
He claimed he believed they were sedatives.
He saw Dad collapse during the board dinner.
Victoria stopped staff from calling an ambulance for eleven minutes.
By then, the heart rhythm could not be restored.
“Why did you let them cremate him?” I asked through the interview glass.
Marcus looked at me.
“Mother said an autopsy would destroy the company.”
“Our father was dead.”
“I know.”
“You protected the company from knowing who killed him.”
He lowered his head.
Marcus also revealed that Victoria kept a private ledger inside the Sterling family crypt.
It listed payments, forged transfers, and every person she controlled.
She called it insurance.
Police surrounded the crypt before dawn.
The main chamber had been opened.
My father’s urn lay shattered.
The hidden compartment was empty.
A message had been written across the stone wall in red lipstick.
GRANT WILL LOSE HIS FAMILY TWICE.
At the hospital, a fire alarm sounded.
Security evacuated the floor.

When I reached Elena’s room, she was there.
Sophia was not.
