Chapter 11 - The Missing Child

Elena tore the IV line from her arm.

Blood ran across her wrist.

“She was beside me.”

“I closed my eyes for one minute.”

Hospital footage showed a nurse pushing Sophia toward the service elevator.

The woman wore a surgical mask.

Her badge belonged to a real nurse working on another floor.

In the garage, the disguise came off.

Victoria looked directly into the camera.

She knew we would see her.

Sophia sat in the wheelchair clutching a stuffed hotel bear.

She did not appear drugged.

She looked terrified.

Victoria loaded her into a black sedan.

The license plate belonged to the Sterling Children’s Foundation.

Police issued an abduction alert.

Elena tried to leave the hospital.

Dr. Kim stopped her.

“Your ribs are cracked.”

“My daughter is gone.”

“You will collapse before you reach the parking lot.”

I held Elena as she fought me.

For months, Victoria had used physical weakness to trap her.

Now every hospital rule felt like another locked door.

I looked at Dr. Kim.

“Prepare a mobile treatment plan.”

“If she understands the risk and signs, can she leave?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then nodded.

Elena signed.

We joined Captain Ortiz inside the command vehicle.

Victoria called from Sophia’s phone.

Her voice sounded calm.

“You took the company.”

“You took Marcus.”

“You turned every servant in my hotel against me.”

“Where is Sophia?”

“With her family.”

“She is our family.”

“No.”

“You married Elena and forgot who built your name.”

“I am done discussing names.”

“What do you want?”

“My ledger.”

“We do not have it.”

“Marcus told you where it was.”

“The compartment was empty.”

Silence followed.

Victoria had expected us to find it.

Someone else reached the crypt first.

“What else?” I asked.

“Elena’s memory card.”

“All copies.”

“That is impossible.”

“Then Sophia remains with me.”

A small voice came through the line.

“Daddy?”

“I am here.”

“Grandma says Mommy is going away.”

“No one is taking Mommy.”

Victoria ended the call.

Captain Ortiz traced the signal to the original Sterling Hotel.

The same abandoned building containing my father’s archive.

Victoria had returned to where the investigation began.

Police surrounded it.

Thermal cameras showed two people on the top floor.

Victoria and Sophia.

A third heat source moved through the basement.

Someone else was inside.

Thomas recognized the building plans.

A freight elevator connected the basement to the roof.

Victoria could reach a waiting helicopter without crossing the police perimeter.

I looked at Elena.

She looked back.

Neither of us needed to speak.

Victoria had spent months convincing our daughter that adults controlled every exit.

We were going to show Sophia another door.
