Chapter 14 - Thomas’s Secret
Judge Weaver named Thomas Reed.
I refused to believe him.
Thomas had helped us find Elena.
He resigned from Victoria’s service.
He guided police through the hotel.
But loyalty after discovery did not erase what came before it.
Captain Ortiz questioned him.
Thomas admitted he had brought my father his medication during the board dinner.
Victoria said Dad had forgotten his evening dose.
Thomas handed him the pills.
Minutes later, Dad collapsed.
“I did not know they were poisoned,” Thomas said.
“Why did you wait eleven minutes to call an ambulance?”
“Victoria ordered security to keep the room closed.”
“You could have disobeyed.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Thomas stared through the interview-room glass.
“My son was in prison.”
“Victoria promised to pay for his attorney and keep him safe.”
“She said if I disobeyed, he would be transferred into general population.”
Fear again.
Always fear.
A reason.
Never an eraser.
Thomas had not planned Dad’s death.
He had obeyed instructions that made it possible.
He also knew Elena’s basement door remained locked.
He saw Sophia searching kitchens.
He told himself Victoria possessed legal authority.
He chose employment over intervention.
“I am sorry,” he said.
I looked at the man who had once carried me upstairs after I broke my leg at twelve.
“You do not apologize to me first.”
Thomas lowered his head.
Elena agreed to meet him at the hospital.
He stood several feet from her bed.
Sophia sat beside her.
Thomas could barely look at the child.
“I should have opened the door,” he said.
Sophia looked at her mother.
Elena answered.
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“So were we.”
“I thought Mrs. Sterling could destroy my family.”
“She nearly destroyed mine.”
Thomas began crying.
Elena did not comfort him.
Forgiveness was not a service victims owed to remorseful witnesses.
Thomas provided a full statement.
He surrendered surveillance files he had secretly preserved.
He accepted charges for obstruction and failure to report abuse.
His cooperation reduced the sentence later.
It did not remove it.
Victoria’s arrest triggered the final collapse.
The offshore transfer was blocked.
The private ledger exposed judges, attorneys, doctors, and executives.
Conrad Mills was charged with fraud, kidnapping conspiracy, and evidence tampering.
Judge Weaver faced bribery, false death reporting, and child endangerment.
Marcus was charged in Dr. Voss’s death and the financial scheme.
Victoria faced charges involving Dad’s death, Elena’s confinement, Sophia’s kidnapping, trust theft, and criminal conspiracy.
The media called it the fall of the Sterling empire.
I disagreed.
The empire had fallen years earlier.
We were only removing the decorations that hid the ruins.
Then Captain Ortiz recovered one final video from Thomas’s archive.
It showed my father inside the board dining room moments before he took the pills.
He looked directly toward the security camera.
