Chapter 13 - THE LAST TRAITOR
Emma refused to believe Owen had betrayed them.
He had chased Danner, protected Lily, and helped board the yacht.
But his badge lay beside the empty vault.
A text arrived on Emma's phone with an address: an abandoned Callahan factory in Yonkers.
Grant wanted officers everywhere. The investigator agreed, but warned that whoever took the ledger might destroy it if they saw police.
Emma entered the factory wearing a hidden microphone.
Owen waited beneath a broken skylight.
He was tied to a chair.
Mason stood behind him with a gun.
Emma stopped cold.
"Mason?"
Grant's brother smiled sadly. "Victor was greedy. Renata was cruel. But neither of them understood the company the way I do."
He held up the ledger.
"Caroline discovered all of us. Victor moved the money. I approved the shell companies. Renata handled Caroline."
"You helped kill her."
"I helped protect the family. Grant would have destroyed everything over one moral crisis."
Owen strained against the ropes. "Run, Emma."
Mason fired into the ceiling.
"No one runs. Emma signs a statement saying Caroline gave her the ledger to extort the family. Then the evidence burns with this factory."
Emma looked at the rusted pipes above them.
She had worked in the estate long enough to recognize Callahan fire-suppression valves.
"You made one mistake," she said.
Mason raised the gun. "What mistake?"
"You brought a housekeeper into a dirty building."
She kicked the valve release.
Water exploded from the ceiling.

And Mason pulled the trigger.
