Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH ON THE FLOOR
The shot missed Emma by inches and struck a steel beam.
Owen threw his chair sideways into Mason's legs. Emma rushed him. The wet concrete turned the fight ugly and fast.
Mason grabbed her throat.
"You should have stayed invisible."
Emma drove her knee into his stomach and tore the ledger from his hand.
Factory doors crashed open. State officers flooded the building. Grant came behind them, saw his brother with the gun, and stopped.
"Mason, put it down."
Mason laughed. "You always got everything. The company. Caroline. Father calling you the decent one. I was supposed to clean up after your conscience."
"You murdered my wife."
"Renata forced her car off the road. Victor cut the brake line. I only made sure the cameras failed."
The confession went through Emma's hidden microphone before it shorted out.
It was enough.
Mason raised the gun toward Grant.
Lily's voice sounded from the doorway.
"Uncle Mason."
Everyone turned. Lily stood beside the investigator, holding Emma's pink rabbit recorder.
"Mommy recorded you too."
Mason's face collapsed.
Grant moved. Officers tackled Mason before he fired.
Hours later, the real ledger proved years of theft from Lily's trust and the company pension fund. Renata, Victor, Danner, and Mason were charged. Their polished world began falling apart in public.
But as reporters surrounded the courthouse, Emma received a call from the dialysis clinic.
