Chapter 7 - THE DEPUTY'S CHOICE

Emma caught Danner's wrist.
"Don't."
Danner's badge flashed beneath the fireworks. For years it had opened doors and ended questions. Now it only made his betrayal uglier, because he had used public trust as another weapon against a child.
He shoved her into the wall and tore the recorder from Lily's hands.
Grant moved, but Danner drew his weapon.
Guests screamed and scattered.
"Nobody follows me," Danner said. "This evidence belongs to law enforcement."
"You work for Victor," Mason said.
Danner backed toward the service stairs. "I work for people who understand reality. Callahan money built this county. Hale money keeps it running."
Lily stood behind Emma, trembling.
Renata smiled through her restraints.
Danner ran.
Owen chased him down the stairs. Emma followed despite Grant's shout to stay back.
They reached the kitchen as Danner crashed through the rear doors. Outside, fireworks from the gala began exploding over the river, turning the lawn red and gold.
Danner headed for a patrol car.
Emma grabbed a metal serving cart and shoved it down the ramp. It slammed into his knees. He fell, and the recorder skidded beneath a parked catering van.
Owen pinned him to the ground.
But Renata had followed.
She reached under the van first.
Emma saw the recorder in her hand and the open catering truck behind her.
"Stop!"
Renata climbed into the truck and locked the door.
The engine roared.
Grant ran onto the lawn just as the truck tore through a row of tables.
Guests scattered.
Lily broke free from Mason and ran after it.
May you like
"Lily!" Emma screamed.
The truck turned directly toward the child.
