Chapter 2: The Uninvited Guest

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom opened, and the guests took their seats. The reflective glass aisle gleamed like a frozen lake, flanked by towering arrangements of white roses. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as the ceremony began. Nathan stood at the altar, his hands clasped in front of him, trying to shake the persistent feeling of unease that had settled in his chest.

What Nathan did not know was that Olivia had taken a drastic, secret measure to ensure her wedding remained untainted by what she perceived as social inferiority. The night before, driven by an obsessive fear that Nathan’s mother would embarrass her in front of her high-society peers, Olivia had pulled the venue’s head of security aside. She had given him a strict, explicit directive: Eleanor Brooks was not to be permitted inside the Grand Ballroom. Olivia had claimed Eleanor was a "disruptive estranged relative," ensuring the guards would turn her away at the door.

But Eleanor, driven by pure, unconditional love for her son, had arrived at the venue early. Clad in a simple, high-neck black lace dress and classic black drop earrings, her elegant gray hair swept up into a neat updo, she had managed to bypass the security checkpoint before the guards had even positioned themselves at the main entrance. She carried no designer handbag, only a tight, vibrant bouquet of deep red roses—Olivia’s favorite flowers—which she had hand-picked as a peace offering.

As the string quartet transitioned into a soft, processional hymn, the doors at the back of the ballroom swung open. But instead of the bridal party, it was Eleanor who stepped onto the reflective glass aisle. She walked with a quiet, humble dignity, her eyes scanning the sea of unfamiliar, wealthy faces until they locked onto her son. A gentle, hopeful smile touched her lips as she walked toward the altar, holding the red roses tightly against her chest.
