Chapter 8: The Ruined Kingdom

Back at the Plaza Hotel, the silence in the Grand Ballroom was deafening. The hundreds of guests had dispersed in a flurry of hushed whispers and awkward departures, leaving the magnificent space feeling like an abandoned theater. The towering white orchids still hung from the ceilings, but their pristine beauty now seemed mocking, a lavish stage set for a play that had ended in disaster.
In the bridal suite, Olivia sat frozen in front of the vanity mirror. The sparkling silver crown sat crookedly on her dark hair, and her mascara had smudged beneath her eyes, leaving dark, tear-stained tracks down her pale cheeks. Her ornate white lace ballgown, once the symbol of her ultimate triumph, now felt like a suffocating cage of wire and silk.
Her mother, a cold, elegant woman who had spent her entire life climbing the social ladder, stood by the window, her arms crossed tightly. "The humiliation, Olivia," her mother muttered, her voice sharp with disapproval. "The Brooks boy has made us the laughingstock of the city. Do you have any idea what this will do to our family's reputation?"

Olivia didn't answer. She stared at her reflection, but for the first time in her life, she didn't see a queen. She saw a hollow, frightened girl who had traded her humanity for a crown.
Slowly, Olivia stood up and walked out of the suite, her heavy train dragging on the carpet. She entered the empty ballroom, her heels echoing off the polished floor. On the altar, lying exactly where Nathan had thrown them, were the deep red roses. She knelt and picked them up. A sharp thorn pricked her thumb, drawing a single bead of crimson blood. She stared at it, the physical pain finally piercing her numb defenses, forcing her to confront the ugly truth of what she had done.
