Chapter 6: The Long Walk

The words hung in the air like a physical blow. Olivia’s face turned into complete shock and heartbreak. Her eyes welled with tears, and a soft, choked gasp escaped her lips as the reality of what was happening finally crashed down upon her.

"Nathan, no..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "You can't do this. Not like this. Please, it was just the stress... I was anxious... I wanted everything to be perfect..."

Beside him, Eleanor clutched Nathan’s tuxedo sleeve, her fingers tight against the dark fabric. "Son, please listen to me," she wept softly, her voice trembling with maternal anguish. "Please, don't do this. Don't ruin your wedding day because of me. I can leave. I’ll go home. Just... please, marry your bride."

Nathan turned to his mother, his expression softening instantly. He reached up, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "Mom, this isn't about you," he said softly, ensuring only she could hear the tenderness in his voice. "This is about who she is. If I walk down that aisle with her today, I’m telling the world that I value her pride over your dignity. And I will never, ever do that."

He offered his arm to his mother, his posture tall and proud.

Eleanor looked at her son, seeing the absolute certainty in his eyes. With a shaky breath, she nodded, slipping her hand through his arm.

Nathan turned away from the altar, completely ignoring Olivia’s desperate, tearful pleas as she reached out to grab his hand. He did not look back. With his mother at his side, Nathan began the long walk down the reflective glass aisle.

The guests watched in stunned, breathless silence as the groom escorted his weeping mother in her simple black lace dress past the towering white orchids and out of the grand venue. Behind them, standing entirely alone under the towering crystal chandeliers, the bride wept, her silver crown crooked, left to face the ruins of her perfect day.
