Chapter 2 - The Whispered Secret

The world stopped turning in that tiny, sterile room. The dripping sound of spilled water hitting the linoleum floor sounded like thunder. Nurse Henderson stumbled backward, her hand pressed against her mouth. Her cheeks, usually flushed with professional calm, turned as white as her exam paper.
"Who, Chloe?" I asked, my voice cracking under the weight of sheer terror. "Who said that to you?"
Chloe’s eyes darted toward the open doorway. Her hands trembled so violently that her sequins shimmered like restless water. She leaned close to my ear, her breath smelling faint, dry, and sickly sweet. "The gardener," she whimpered. "Mr. Julian."
My blood ran colder than the winter air outside. Mr. Julian. The quiet, gray-haired man who tended the school gardens. The elderly man every parent trusted. The man who gave the kids sunflower seeds in the spring.
"He... he gave me a necklace," Chloe sobbed, tears spilling over her cheeks. "Two weeks ago. He said it was a magical silver thread." "He said it would grant wishes if I kept it hidden under my skin." "He put it on me... and then it went inside." "He told me... if I told you or the nurse, the thread would strangle me."
My stomach turned upside down. I looked closer at the dark, undulating line beneath her skin. It wasn't a biological infection. It wasn't a disease. It was a physical object—a thin, metallic strand embedded beneath her delicate epidermis. And worse, it was shifting. It was reacting to her terror.
"Mrs. Henderson," I snapped, standing up with a sudden, ferocious clarity. "Call an ambulance. Now!"
The nurse stood paralyzed, staring at Chloe’s neck in sheer disbelief. "I... I thought she was faking," Henderson stammered, her voice trembling. "I thought she just wanted attention..."
"CALL THE AMBULANCE!" I roared. The intensity of my voice shattered her trance. She lunged for the landline on her desk, her hands shaking so hard she dropped the receiver twice.
I scooped Chloe into my arms, wrapping her tightly against my chest. I was terrified of touching her neck. Terrified that any pressure might make that hideous, dark wire tighten around her throat. She buried her face into my collarbone, weeping quietly.
"I'm sorry, Mommy," she whimpered. "I'm sorry I didn't eat. It hurt too much to swallow."
"Shh... baby, no," I whispered, kissing her head, tears falling freely down my face. "You did nothing wrong. Mommy's here. Mommy's got you."
Through the window of the nurse's office, I looked out into the courtyard. Through the glass, past the bare oak trees, I saw him. Mr. Julian was standing near the toolshed. He was holding a rusty pair of hedge shears. And he was staring directly at the nurse's office window.
When our eyes met across the snowy yard... He didn't look shocked. He didn't look worried. He slowly lifted his hand... and made a twisting motion with his wrist.
Immediately, Chloe gasped for air. She clawed at her throat. The black line beneath her skin pulsed deep indigo, tightening visibly like a strangling wire.

"He's doing it!" Chloe choked out, her voice barely a gasp. "Mommy... I can't breathe!"
Panic exploded in my chest. I didn't wait for the ambulance. I didn't wait for the police. I grabbed my daughter, slammed open the office door, and ran into the crowded hallway.
