Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

The ER was plunged into chaos. Security guards rushed toward the intruder, drawing their batons. "Sir! Drop what's in your hand and get on the ground!" shouted a guard.
Mr. Julian didn't even look at him. He simply flicked his wrist. The copper pendulum swung wide. A low, humming sound filled the corridor—a frequency so deep it made the metal cabinets rattle and my teeth ache.
The security guards suddenly dropped to their knees, clutching their ears and groaning in agony. The heart monitors flatlined into static. The fluorescent lights flickered violently and died, leaving only the dim, red glow of the emergency backup lighting.
"Who are you?!" I screamed, standing between Julian and my daughter's gurney. "What did you do to my baby?!"
Julian stopped ten feet away. Up close, he didn't look like an old gardener anymore. His eyes were not gray—they were milky white, completely devoid of pupils, yet he tracked my movements with absolute precision.
"I am a caretaker, Mrs. Miller," he spoke, his voice sounding like dry leaves grinding together. "I harvest what is pure before this rotten world ruins it."
"You're a monster!" I shrieked.
"Your daughter has a rare gift," Julian continued softly, ignoring my outburst. "A light inside her soul that only comes around once in a generation. The metal around her neck is an ancient binding—a Choke-Thread. It feeds on her life energy, refining it, storing it into this vessel." He raised the copper box.
"If you let me take her... she will live forever in grace," he smiled, revealing yellowed teeth. "If you fight me... the thread will finish closing. Her neck will break from the inside out."
"You sick bastard!"
Suddenly, the doors behind Julian burst open again. Mark, my husband, stumbled into the room, gasping for breath, soaked in snow. He saw the chaos, saw the blood on Chloe’s sweater, saw Julian holding the pendulum.
"Sarah!" Mark yelled. He didn't ask questions. He saw a threat to his family, grabbed a heavy metal IV pole from the floor, and charged at Julian from behind.
"Mark, no!" I screamed.
Julian didn't turn around. He merely swished the pendulum backward. An invisible force hit Mark like a speeding car, throwing him back across the hallway into a wall of glass cabinets. Mark hit the ground hard, groaning, blood pooling from his forehead.
"Mark!" I cried out.
My husband was down. The doctors were cowering. Chloe was suffocating on the table, her hands feebly reaching into the empty air for me.
Mommy... her eyes begged.
In that moment of absolute horror, a cold, lethal calm washed over me. The panic faded. The fear burned away. All that remained was the ferocious instinct of a mother whose child was being torn away from her.
I looked at Julian. I looked at the copper pendulum in his hand. I realized something. Every time Chloe gasped, every time the thread tightened, Julian’s thumb moved against the side of that small wooden box.
The thread wasn't magic. It was a mechanism. A cruel, ancient, sympathetic device that responded to the device in his hands.
"You want her light?" I said, taking a slow step toward him. My voice was quiet now. Devoid of emotion.
Julian smirked. "It is already hers to give."
"Take mine instead," I said, reaching for my sweater collar.
May you like
Julian paused, his milky eyes narrowing. "Your soul is tarnished by age and bitterness."
"Maybe," I whispered, taking another step. "But it's heavier."
