Chapter 4 - Into the ER

Two nurses and an emergency physician sprang into action immediately. They didn't ask for insurance. They didn't ask for ID. The sight of a blue-lipped child clawing at her own throat was all the authorization they needed.

"Get her to Trauma Room 2!" shouted Dr. Vane, a tall, sharp-eyed woman with silvering hair. "Prepare 0.5 of epinephrine and get an airway kit ready!"

They swept Chloe out of my arms and laid her on a gurney. I tried to follow, but a male nurse gently caught my shoulders. "Ma'am, you need to step back and let us work!"

"No! You don't understand!" I screamed, struggling against his grip. "It's not an allergic reaction! Look under her chin!"

Dr. Vane was already cutting away the neck of Chloe's blue sequin sweater. When the collar ripped open, revealing the full extent of the mark, the doctor froze.

The black line was no longer just a line. It had expanded into tiny, vein-like tendrils spreading downward toward her sternum and upward toward her jaw. It looked like a parasite made of dark metal living under her skin.

"What in God's name..." Dr. Vane whispered, her medical composure momentarily shattering. She pressed her gloved fingers against Chloe's neck. "This is... hard. It's metallic. It's obstructing her trachea from the outside in!"

"Intubate her!" a nurse yelled.

"I can't!" Dr. Vane shouted back. "The tissue is too rigid! The airway is being crushed!"

Chloe’s heart monitor began to beep wildly. Beep-beep-beep-beep. The numbers on the screen were dropping. Oxygen saturation: 78%. 72%. 65%.

"Get a scalpel!" Dr. Vane ordered, her voice laced with desperation. "We need to perform an emergency tracheotomy! We have to bypass the constriction!"

"No! Don't cut it!" I cried out, breaking free from the nurse and throwing myself against the gurney. "She said if anyone touches it, it bites tighter!"

Dr. Vane looked at me, her eyes filled with horrific conflict. "Mrs. Miller, if I don't cut her neck right now to give her air, your daughter will suffer brain damage in ninety seconds. She will die in three minutes."

Before the scalpel could touch Chloe's skin... The glass doors of the ER lobby shattered.

Exploded inward in a rain of razor-sharp safety glass. Patients screamed. Nurses hit the deck.

Through the cloud of dust and snow blowing into the hospital... A figure walked in. It was Mr. Julian. He wore a heavy oilskin coat. In his left hand, he held a dark wooden box covered in copper engravings. In his right hand... he held an old copper pendulum, spinning slowly on a silver chain.

"I told the little girl not to tell," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating through the room. "And I told her mother to stay out of it."
