Chapter 6 - The Unseen MastermindThe discovery of the empty safe sent shockwaves through Charlotte’s circle of allies. The realization that someone had bypassed the high-security clearance of Eleanor Vale’s private office meant the conspirators had access at the highest level—someone who was still inside the inner circle.

Charlotte immediately ordered a full audit of all security access logs for the past forty-eight hours. Julian worked beside her through the night, cross-referencing staff movements, keycard access records, and closed-circuit television footage.

At 3:00 AM, Julian found the anomaly.

“Look at this,” Julian said, pointing to a computer monitor showing the access logs for the top-floor private elevator. “The floor was accessed late last night using a master override code that hasn't been used in five years.”

“Whose code is it?” Charlotte asked, leaning over his shoulder.

“It belongs to Marcus Vance,” Julian said softly, his voice trembling slightly. “My uncle... the co-founder of Solmere who allegedly retired to Europe ten years ago.”

Charlotte turned to look at Julian, her eyes wide with shock. “Marcus Vance? He’s been living in Switzerland for a decade. Why would his master key be active in this hotel yesterday?”

Before Julian could answer, his phone chimed with a private encrypted text message. He looked down at the screen, his face draining of color. He showed the phone to Charlotte.

The message read: “Bring the girl to the old docks on the east side of the city. Come alone, or the international holdings of Solmere will be liquidated before sunrise.”

Charlotte felt a chill run down her spine. The true scale of the conspiracy was far larger than a simple battle for control of a luxury hotel. The international holdings—the true core of the Vale family’s global wealth—were held in an overseas trust that could only be accessed with a combination of Charlotte’s biometric key and the founder’s master passcodes, which Marcus Vance had stolen from the safe.

“It was never just about taking the hotel,” Charlotte realized, her voice cold and resolute. “Arthur Sterling was just the distraction. Marcus used Arthur to draw my attention while he stole the master key files.”

“You can’t go to the docks, Charlotte,” Julian said firmly, grabbing her shoulders. “It’s a trap. Marcus is dangerous. He eliminated his own partners twenty years ago to build this empire.”

“If I don’t go, he destroys everything my mother built,” Charlotte replied, looking Julian straight in the eyes. “We aren’t going to play his game, Julian. We’re going to change the rules.”
