Chapter 11 — Vanessa’s Confession

Vanessa agreed to speak with investigators after learning Adrian had blamed her for the most cruel parts of the plan.
She requested to see Claire.
Nathan objected.
Claire went anyway.
Vanessa sat behind a glass divider in the detention center.
Without the expensive dresses and carefully applied makeup, she looked smaller.
“You won,” Vanessa said.
Claire sat across from her.
“This was never a game.”
“It was to me.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Nathan chose you.”
Claire remained silent.
Vanessa admitted she had known Nathan in college.
They dated briefly before Nathan met Claire.
He ended the relationship honestly, but Vanessa never accepted the rejection.
Years later, when Adrian proposed using her to gain access to the Hale family, she volunteered.
“I wanted him to regret leaving me,” Vanessa said.
“So you drugged him and destroyed his memory of that night.”
“I needed him to believe it was possible.”
“You used a child who never existed.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I could stop before it went too far.”
“You arranged to obtain a newborn.”
“That was Adrian’s plan.”
“You contacted the broker.”
Vanessa had no answer.
Claire leaned closer.
“My son noticed your stomach didn’t change. Do you know why?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Because he still believed in his father. You mistook that belief for weakness.”
Claire stood.
“Was any part of your pregnancy story true?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered, “Years ago, I was pregnant.”
Claire stopped.
“I lost the baby before anyone knew.”
Vanessa had kept photographs of that old ultrasound.
She used her own loss to make the lie convincing.
For a moment, Claire felt sympathy.
Then she remembered Ethan’s frightened face, Nathan’s shame, and the weeks their family had slept beneath the same roof like strangers.
Pain could explain cruelty.
It could not excuse it.
“You needed help,” Claire said. “Instead, you chose revenge.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
Before Claire left, Vanessa revealed one final secret.
Margaret had known the pregnancy documents were suspicious.
Not from the beginning.
But two weeks before the dinner, Margaret discovered the clinic had no Dr. Vale.
She confronted Vanessa.
Vanessa threatened to reveal the old Hale-Cole agreement and accuse Charles of theft.
Margaret remained silent to protect her late husband’s reputation.
Claire returned to the mansion and found Margaret waiting in the library.
“Is it true?” Claire asked.
Margaret did not pretend to misunderstand.
“Yes.”
“You knew there might not be a baby.”
“I was afraid.”
“So you allowed Nathan to believe he had betrayed his wife.”
“I thought Vanessa only wanted money.”
“You allowed Ethan to be threatened.”
“I didn’t know Adrian was involved.”
Claire’s voice remained calm.
“That is what people always say when the damage becomes too large. They say they didn’t know how far the lie would go.”
Nathan stood in the doorway.
He had heard everything.
Margaret turned toward him.
“Nathan—”
“You need to leave this house.”
Her face went pale.
“I’m your mother.”
“And Claire is my wife. Ethan is my son.”
Margaret began crying.

Nathan opened the door.
“For once, I am choosing them before the family name.”
