Chapter 7 — The Fire in the Study

They reached the mansion and found smoke pouring from the east wing.
Nathan ran inside before the firefighters arrived.
Claire shouted after him, but he disappeared through the front doors.
The smoke came from the study.
Nathan covered his mouth and pushed forward.
A small fire burned near the desk, spreading across scattered documents.
Vanessa stood beside the open wall safe.
She held a metal box containing Nathan’s estate records.
“Put it down!” he shouted.
She turned.
Her face was no longer soft or frightened.
The carefully designed version of Vanessa had disappeared.
“You ruined everything,” she said.
“I ruined nothing.”
“You canceled my family’s contract.”
“Your company used unsafe materials.”
“My father lost his business. My brother lost his home. My mother died believing our name had been destroyed.”
“So you decided to destroy my family?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Your family was already weak.”
She glanced toward the doorway.
Claire appeared through the smoke with Ethan behind her.
“You should have stayed gone,” Vanessa told Claire.
Claire stepped forward.
“You drugged my husband.”
“I gave him enough to sleep.”
“You framed him.”
“I gave people a story they were ready to believe.”
Nathan moved closer.
“Hand me the box.”
Vanessa held it near the flames.
Inside were signed copies of Nathan’s will, shareholder agreements, and confidential documents she had convinced Margaret to access.
“You have no proof without these.”
Ethan lifted his phone.
“We have the hotel video.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.
Ruiz entered behind them with two police officers.
Vanessa backed toward the window.
“Stay away.”
The fire alarm finally began ringing.
Sprinklers activated overhead.
Water poured across the room, weakening the flames.
Vanessa tried to throw the metal box into the fire, but Nathan caught her wrist.
She struggled briefly before the officers pulled her away.
The box fell safely onto the wet carpet.
As they placed handcuffs on her, Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“You think you saved them?”
“I exposed you.”
“No.”
Her voice became strangely calm.
“I only played the part Adrian gave me.”
Ruiz stepped closer.
“Your brother planned this?”
Vanessa smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
She looked at Nathan.
“The pregnancy was never the real attack.”
The officers led her away.
Firefighters contained the blaze before it reached the rest of the house.
Later, while examining the rescued documents, Ruiz found a confidential government proposal connected to Hale Aerospace.
A handwritten note appeared on one page.
Deliver prototype schedule to A.C. before August 12.
The initials matched Adrian Cole.
Vanessa had used the fake pregnancy to gain access to Nathan’s home, his family, and eventually his secure study.
The baby was a distraction.

The real target was a classified aerospace guidance system worth billions.
And Adrian Cole had already received part of the design.
