Chapter 9 — The Drive Vanessa Hid

The drive contained encrypted files.
Federal technicians worked through the night.
By morning, they discovered it held more than stolen aerospace designs.
It contained payment records.
Names of corrupt suppliers.
Messages between Adrian and foreign buyers.
Most damaging of all, it contained voice recordings of Adrian giving Vanessa instructions.
“You only need to make Nathan doubt himself,” Adrian said in one recording. “Guilt will do the rest.”
Another recording described the fake pregnancy.
“Once Margaret trusts you, get access to the safe. The baby story ends after we have the full design.”
Vanessa had secretly copied the recordings.
Ruiz believed she hid them inside Ethan’s radio as insurance against Adrian.
“She never trusted her brother,” he explained.
Nathan listened to the recordings in silence.
Vanessa had been both a criminal and a tool.
That did not excuse her actions.
But it explained why she had tried to warn them that Adrian was the greater danger.
The data drive also revealed Adrian planned to meet a buyer at an abandoned Cole Manufacturing facility outside the city.
The exchange would happen in forty-eight hours.
Federal agents prepared an operation.
Nathan was instructed to behave normally.
Adrian could not know they had discovered the drive.
But the threatening message to Ethan meant Adrian was already suspicious.
Claire wanted to take Ethan somewhere safe.
Ethan refused.
“I’m not running because he sent a picture.”
“This isn’t bravery,” Claire said. “It’s danger.”
Ethan looked at his father.
“Can the files be copied?”
Nathan nodded.
“Then give Adrian a copy that tracks him.”
Ruiz considered the idea.
A tracking program could identify every device connected to the drive.
But Adrian expected the original.
The agents created a perfect duplicate containing enough authentic data to appear real.
They also embedded a silent transmitter in the casing.
Nathan sent a message to the unknown number.
Leave my son out of this. Tell me where to bring it.
The response came an hour later.
Midnight. Old Cole plant. Come alone.
Nathan showed the message to Claire.
“You are not going alone,” she said.
“I’ll have federal agents nearby.”
“That isn’t what the message says.”
“I can’t let him threaten Ethan.”
Claire stared at him.
For weeks, Nathan had acted from guilt.
Now he was acting from responsibility.
There was a difference.
“Come home,” she said.
“I will.”
At 11:30 p.m., Nathan drove toward the abandoned plant.
Ruiz and federal agents followed at a distance without headlights.
Nathan wore a hidden microphone.
The duplicate drive rested in his coat pocket.
The old factory stood beyond a rusted gate, its broken windows reflecting the moonlight.
Nathan entered through the loading bay.
A single lamp illuminated the center of the building.
Adrian Cole stepped from behind a steel column.
He looked exhausted but calm.
“You finally brought what belongs to me.”
Nathan stopped ten feet away.
“It never belonged to you.”
Adrian smiled.
“Neither did the company contract your father stole from mine twenty-two years ago.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
“My father?”
“You thought this began with Vanessa?”
May you like
Adrian held out his hand.
“This began before either of us understood what revenge meant.”
