Chapter 6 — The Man in the Hallway
The hotel security footage was stored on an external server.
Ruiz obtained access the following morning.
Nathan, Claire, and Ethan watched from a private conference room.
The video showed the night of the company celebration.
At 10:42 p.m., Nathan appeared in the ballroom, visibly unsteady.
Vanessa approached him with a glass of water.
At 10:47, he drank from it.
At 10:55, he nearly fell.
Vanessa guided him toward the elevator.
Claire covered her mouth.
“She put something in that drink.”
Ruiz rewound the footage.
The angle was poor, but Vanessa’s hand moved briefly over the glass before giving it to Nathan.
At 11:03, they exited the elevator on the fourteenth floor.
Vanessa used Nathan’s key card to open his suite.
Then she returned to the hallway.
She did not enter.
At 11:16, a man wearing a hotel maintenance jacket stepped out of the stairwell.
Vanessa handed him an envelope.
The man entered Nathan’s suite.
“What happened inside?” Nathan asked.
“There were no cameras in the room,” Ruiz said.
At 11:38, the man emerged carrying Nathan’s jacket.
Vanessa entered the suite for less than two minutes.
When she left, her hair was messy and the shoulder of her dress had been lowered.
She looked exactly like someone leaving after an intimate encounter.
At 12:05 a.m., she returned to the ballroom and made sure several employees saw her crying.
The next morning, she sent Nathan a message claiming they had made a terrible mistake.
Nathan stared at the screen.
“She staged everything.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
She had spent weeks questioning sixteen years of marriage because Vanessa had constructed a scene designed to create doubt.
Ethan looked at Ruiz.
“Who was the man?”
The hotel had no maintenance employee matching his description.
However, facial recognition software identified a possible match.
Lucas Grant.
A former actor who now performed private security jobs.
Ruiz discovered that Lucas had received fifty thousand dollars from a shell company registered to Vanessa’s brother, Adrian Cole.
The Cole family had once controlled a major aerospace supplier.
Hale Aerospace had canceled their contract after discovering defective materials.
The decision pushed Cole Manufacturing toward bankruptcy.
Vanessa’s fake pregnancy was not simply an attempt to steal Nathan from Claire.
It was part of a financial plan.
Ruiz uncovered draft legal agreements on a cloud account connected to Vanessa.
The documents proposed child-support payments, trust-fund control, and an ownership transfer involving five percent of Hale Aerospace.
If Nathan accepted Vanessa’s child as his heir, Cole Manufacturing would gain indirect access to Hale resources.
But that still did not explain how Vanessa planned to produce an actual baby.
Until Ruiz found a message sent to a private adoption broker.
The message requested a newborn matching Nathan’s complexion and blood type.
Vanessa intended to fake the pregnancy for nine months, then obtain a baby through an illegal private arrangement.
Once Nathan believed the child was his, she would demand a legal settlement.
Claire turned away from the screen.
Nathan closed his eyes.
He had nearly signed preliminary trust papers the previous week.
Margaret had encouraged him.
“Where is Vanessa now?” Ethan asked.
Ruiz checked his phone.
“She left the hospital thirty minutes ago.”
“Where did she go?”
“No one knows.”
At that moment, Nathan’s phone rang.
It was Margaret.
Her voice shook.
“Nathan, Vanessa is at the mansion.”
“Why?”
“She says she needs to explain.”
“Do not let her leave.”
Margaret began to answer.
Then the call ended.
Nathan dialed again.
No response.
Ethan stood.
“She knows Grandma supported her.”
Claire understood immediately.
