Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Vote.
Ruth moved between Vivienne and Nora.
One of the guards raised his weapon.
The second officer inside the van reached beneath his jacket.
Vivienne smiled.
"Do not make this look like a kidnapping."
Ruth stared at her.
"It is a kidnapping."
"I am Nora's legal guardian."
Vivienne held up a court-stamped document.
"Adrian signed the consent last night."
"He was drugged."
"That accusation will be reviewed."
"By the same doctor who drugged him?"
Vivienne's smile tightened.
"Dr. Kessler is no longer involved in Nora's treatment."
The child-crimes officer beside Ruth spoke into his radio.
No answer came.
Northbridge had blocked the signal.
Vivienne looked at the officer.
"You are trespassing on private medical property without a warrant."
"Detective Ortiz is inside under exigent circumstances."
"Detective Ortiz entered under a false identity."
Vivienne lifted one hand.
"My attorneys are already speaking to her supervisor."
Ruth understood the timing.
The guardianship order.
The blocked radios.
The armed guards.
Vivienne had not discovered them by chance.
Someone had told her exactly where the van would be.
Ruth looked toward the front seats.
The driver avoided her eyes.
He wore a state police uniform.
He was not one of Lena's regular officers.
Ruth had seen him arrive minutes before departure.
"He called you."
She pointed at the driver.
The man reached for the ignition.
Ruth grabbed the metal medical case beside her and swung it at his headrest.
The case struck his shoulder.
The officer beside Nora seized the driver's wrist before he could draw a weapon.
The van erupted into movement.
One Northbridge guard pulled Ruth through the open doors.
She struck the pavement hard.
Pain tore through her hip.
Vivienne reached inside for Nora.
The child screamed and kicked.
Her bare heel struck Vivienne's chest.
Vivienne's face twisted.
The mask fell away completely.
She grabbed Nora's burned arm.
Nora cried out.
Ruth lunged from the ground and caught Vivienne around the waist.
They fell together.
The guardianship papers scattered across the wet pavement.
The Northbridge guard aimed at Ruth.
A black sedan struck him from behind.
He rolled across the hood and dropped his weapon.
Margaret Vale stepped out of the sedan before it fully stopped.
She was seventy-one years old, silver-haired, and dressed in a charcoal suit that had frightened federal prosecutors for three decades.
As a former appellate judge, she had spent most of Adrian's adult life telling him where he was wrong.
As Nora's grandmother, she had crossed three states in a private aircraft after Owen called her at dawn.
She held a tire iron in one hand.
"Remove your hand from my granddaughter."
Vivienne stared at her.
"Margaret, this is a misunderstanding."
Margaret looked at Nora's bandaged arm.
"That word will not protect you."
The remaining child-crimes officer secured the driver.
Ruth crawled toward Nora.
Margaret stood over Vivienne.
"You have a temporary order signed by Judge Pell."
Vivienne rose slowly.
"It gives me custody."
"It gives you emergency authority based on a medical affidavit that names a physician currently in police custody."
Vivienne's face shifted.
"Simon is not in custody."
"Then you know more than the order says."
Margaret held out her hand.
"Give me the papers."
Vivienne gathered them from the pavement.
"You cannot overrule a court."
"No."
Margaret took the document and tore it in half.
"But I can ignore a fraud until a real judge tells me not to."
Vivienne looked toward the clinic entrance.
More guards were coming.
Margaret opened the rear door of her sedan.
"Ruth, take Nora."
"Where?"
"Somewhere the Cross family does not own the cameras."
Ruth helped Nora into the car.
Vivienne stepped in front of the door.
Margaret raised the tire iron.
"I have disliked you since you corrected my pronunciation of a French wine you could not afford before meeting my son."
Her voice remained calm.
"Do not give me a legal reason to enjoy this moment."
Vivienne moved aside.
The sedan pulled away as Northbridge security surrounded the van.
Ruth looked through the rear window.
Vivienne stood alone in the rain.
Her white suit was stained with mud.
Her face no longer resembled the grieving woman from television.
She raised her phone and made a call.
At Vale Meridian headquarters, the emergency board meeting began at nine exactly.
Twenty-four directors appeared on the wall screens.
Daniel Mercer's chair remained empty.
Owen joined from a secure room beneath the estate garage.
Vivienne entered the boardroom at nine zero-three wearing a fresh black suit.
No one mentioned the change of clothes.
No one asked why the legal guardian of a traumatized child had left her within minutes.
Money trained intelligent people to avoid questions that might threaten their comfort.
The chairman, Frederick Sloan, cleared his throat.
"We are here to consider temporary continuity measures."
Vivienne placed Adrian's voting proxy on the table.
"Adrian asked me to protect the company if his health failed."
Owen spoke through the screen.
"Adrian never signed that."
"You are not a director."
"I am head of security."
"A position that will be reviewed after your failure last night."
Frederick raised one hand.
"We will maintain order."
Vivienne looked around the table.
"Adrian attacked me during a paranoid episode."
She showed the repaired bruise on her wrist.
"He accused me of hurting Nora after his housekeeper left a lighter where she could reach it."
A director named Caroline Shaw leaned forward.
"The live interview showed makeup on Mr. Vale's hand."
Vivienne's expression became pained.
"Northbridge uses medical concealer to document bruising under harsh lights."
"That explanation came quickly."
"Because Marcus explained it to me."
Caroline did not look convinced.
Frederick opened the proxy document.
"The medical affidavit appears valid."
Owen placed Elena's archive footage on every screen.
The image showed Vivienne and Marcus in the estate garage beside Elena's wrecked vehicle.
The boardroom became silent.
Vivienne stared at the screen.
Her control slipped for one breath.
Then she stood.
"This footage is fabricated."
"The archive drive has been offline since before the crash."
Owen's voice came through every speaker.
"It cannot be remotely altered."
"Your department controls the archive."
"My department did not know it existed."
The footage showed Daniel entering the garage.
Directors began whispering.
Frederick looked toward Daniel's empty chair.
"Where is Mercer?"
Vivienne answered.
"He orchestrated this."
Owen stared at her through the screen.
"You were beside the car."
"Daniel called me after the crash."
"Why?"
"Because Elena had accused Marcus of stealing company money."
"Did he?"
Vivienne looked around the table.
"Cross Security performed legitimate consulting work."
Caroline opened a folder.
"For ninety-two million dollars over four years."
Vivienne's face remained composed.
"That amount covered global infrastructure."
"It also passed through six shell companies."
Caroline held up another page.
"I received these records anonymously at six this morning."
Owen frowned.
Someone else was feeding the board evidence.
Frederick looked at the clock.
"The market opens in twenty-five minutes."
"Then vote."
Vivienne's voice sharpened.
"Every minute without leadership destroys shareholder value."
Caroline leaned back.
"A child was burned, a founder was drugged, and a dead woman's car appeared in a secret garage."
She looked directly at Vivienne.
"Shareholder value can survive another question."
The board postponed the vote for thirty minutes.
During the delay, Caroline locked the original proxy document inside the board evidence safe.
Vivienne demanded its return.
Caroline refused without an independent handwriting review.
Two directors who had supported the emergency transfer joined her.
They had not become brave.
They had become afraid of being named in the next investigation.
Motives mattered less than the extra minutes their resistance created.
Those minutes allowed Lena to reach Northbridge, Adrian to escape his restraints, and Nora's memory to become more powerful than Vivienne's paperwork.
Vivienne left the room and called Marcus.
He answered from the Northbridge basement.
"Ortiz found the west room."
"Then destroy it."
"She also found the woman."
Vivienne stopped walking.
"Did she see her face?"
"I cut the feed."
"Move her now."
"Where?"
"The airfield."
Marcus swore.
"That was not the plan."
"The plan ended when Nora remembered."
Vivienne looked through the glass wall toward the boardroom.
"Take Elena out of the country before Adrian gets free."
"And Nora?"
"Margaret has her."
Marcus was silent.
"You lost a seven-year-old to an old woman with a tire iron?"
Vivienne's hand tightened around the phone.
"Do not confuse delay with loss."
"The board will remove you."
"Not if Adrian becomes dangerous on camera again."
At Northbridge, Adrian and Jonah crawled through a steel laundry shaft above the basement corridor.
The metal burned cold against Adrian's hands.
Below them, Lena and Kessler searched the observation rooms.
Adrian heard Nora's name through Lena's radio.
He pushed faster.
The shaft ended above an industrial laundry room.
Jonah removed the grate.
They dropped onto bags of linen.
Adrian nearly collapsed.
Jonah caught him.
"You need a hospital."
"I am in one."
"A real one."
"After Nora."
The basement alarm changed tone.
A recorded voice announced a fire in the west wing.
Smoke began entering the ventilation system.
"They are burning the records."
Jonah opened the laundry door.
The corridor beyond was filling with staff.
Adrian took a white coat from a hook and pulled it over his hospital clothes.
They moved against the evacuation flow.
Lena emerged from the observation hallway with Kessler.
She raised her weapon before recognizing Adrian.
"You look terrible."
"Where is Nora?"
"With Margaret."
"And the woman in the room?"
Lena's expression changed.
"Gone."
Adrian stared at her.
"What woman?"
Kessler looked toward the smoke.
"They kept a long-term patient under the name Eva Lane."
"Who is she?"
Kessler did not answer.
Adrian grabbed the front of his shirt.
"Who is she?"
"I never saw her face until today."
"Who?"
Kessler's voice dropped.
"Your wife."
The fire alarm continued around them.
Adrian released him slowly.
"Elena died."
"No."
Kessler looked ashamed.
"Elena survived the crash."
Adrian's face emptied.
"Where is she?"
A vehicle engine roared from the basement garage.
Lena ran toward the exit.
They reached the loading bay in time to see a dark ambulance break through the security gate.
A woman lay strapped to the gurney behind its rear windows.
Her head turned toward the glass.
Even through smoke and distance, Adrian recognized her eyes.
Elena lifted one hand.
The ambulance disappeared into traffic.
Adrian stood in the road wearing a stolen white coat and broken restraints.
His dead wife had looked directly at him.
Then his phone rang from Jonah's pocket.
Owen's voice came through.
"The board vote begins in five minutes."
Adrian watched the ambulance vanish.
"Let them vote."
"You could lose the company."
"I lost my wife for two years."
He turned toward Lena.
"Find that ambulance."
On the boardroom screen, Vivienne received the proxy votes needed to become interim chair.
She smiled as the result appeared.
Then an assistant entered and whispered that Adrian had escaped Northbridge.
Vivienne's smile remained in place.
Only her hand moved beneath the table.
She opened a message from Marcus.
ELENA IS AWAKE.
May you like
A second message arrived.
SHE SAID DANIEL'S NAME.
