Chapter 17 - Four Minutes of Air.
The gas alarm began counting backward from two hundred forty seconds.
A mechanical voice repeated the warning on every floor.
Oxygen-reduction system activation in progress.
Evacuate sealed zones immediately.
Employees flooded the stairwells.
Some carried shoes in their hands.
Some carried laptops until security officers knocked them away and told them to carry one another instead.
The public lobby became a river of frightened people.
Outside, news cameras captured thousands pouring into the plaza beneath flashing red lights.
On the sixty-second floor, Adrian stood against reinforced glass and watched Daniel pull Nora toward the executive corridor.
His first instinct was to break the barrier with his body.
His second was to look at his daughter.
Nora shook her head once.
She pointed behind him.
Caroline Shaw was still bound to the chair.
Two directors lay injured near the shattered window.
The tactical team could not open the steel shutters.
Nora understood the choice Daniel had created.
She also understood her father's face.
"Help them."
Her voice did not pass through the glass.
Adrian read her lips.
He placed one hand against the barrier.
"I am coming back."
Nora placed her small palm against his from the other side.
Then Daniel pulled her away.
Adrian turned from the glass.
"Get the directors into the south stairwell."
Owen shook his head.
"The shutters sealed it."
"Maintenance shaft."
"It holds six people at most."
"Then make trips."
Adrian moved to Caroline.
He cut the restraints with glass from the broken window.
"Can you walk?"
"Can you?"
"Not the time."
"Then yes."
Caroline stood and helped lift Frederick Sloan.
The board chairman had a deep cut across his forehead.
He looked at Adrian with shame.
"I voted for her."
"Survive long enough to regret it."
Adrian pushed him toward Owen.
The gas countdown reached two hundred seconds.
Across the street, Ruth studied the tower's mechanical plans on a command screen.
Margaret stood beside her, speaking with federal emergency officials.
Lena remained at Dock Seventeen but had transferred tactical control to a city commander.
Elena's body camera appeared as a moving dot inside the forty-eighth-floor service shaft.
She was climbing toward Nora.
"She cannot reach sixty-two in four minutes."
Ruth's finger moved along the plans.
"There is an express ventilation riser from fifty to the executive floor."
The commander shook his head.
"It is sealed by fire dampers."
"Manual controls are in the old mail room."
"How do you know?"
"I supervised the cleaning staff when the tower opened."
Ruth enlarged the diagram.
"Adrian refused fully electronic ventilation after his father was trapped in a warehouse fire."
Margaret looked at the screen.
"My husband was not trapped."
"He locked himself in the wine office because he thought the alarm was a drill."
Margaret paused.
"That sounds more accurate."
Ruth pointed to the fifty-first floor.
"Open the manual dampers here and the executive corridor will vent into the roof stack."
The commander contacted the fire team.
Two firefighters changed direction inside the stairwell.
The countdown reached one hundred seventy seconds.
Daniel dragged Nora into Adrian's office.
Vivienne followed with the blue ledger pressed against her chest.
Marcus locked the door behind them.
The office windows looked across the city.
A helicopter waited on the roof one level above.
Its rotors had begun turning.
"We leave now."
Marcus moved toward the private staircase.
Daniel blocked him.
"Not until the transfer is signed."
"Adrian is evacuating the board."
"He will return."
"He cannot get through the shutters."
"He will find another route."
Marcus laughed harshly.
"You really do believe he is smarter than everyone."
"No."
Daniel looked toward the office door.
"I believe he is predictable when someone he loves is afraid."
Vivienne placed the ledger on the desk.
"We have the accounts."
"The accounts mean nothing without Adrian's signature."
"We can forge it."
"Not after the broadcast."
Daniel's voice sharpened.
"Every regulator in the world will examine the ink."
Vivienne looked at Nora.
"Then use the child."
Nora stood near the windows with both hands pressed against her sides.
She listened to the countdown.
One hundred fifty seconds.
"The gas will hurt you too."
Daniel looked at her.
"This office has a separate air supply."
"What about the people outside?"
"Your father is helping them."
"Because you made him."
"Because leaders make choices."
Nora looked at Vivienne.
"Bad people always call hurting someone a choice."
Vivienne crossed the room and grabbed her burned arm.
Nora cried out.
Marcus watched with irritation.
Daniel's face changed.
"Release her."
Vivienne tightened her grip.
"Do not pretend you care now."
"I said release her."
"You watched Elena through glass."
"That was necessary."
"You placed the camera in Bunny."
"That was control."
"You gave me the lighter."
The words stopped Nora's breathing.
Daniel stared at Vivienne.
"I gave you the lighter to place in Ruth's room."
"You told me to make the child afraid."
"I did not tell you to burn her."
"You did not ask how I did it."
Vivienne smiled.
"You only asked whether she talked."
Nora looked at Daniel.
The man who called himself different from Vivienne had no answer.
The countdown reached one hundred twenty seconds.
Nora saw the red fire alarm behind Marcus.
It was not connected to the tower's electronic network.
A small hammer hung beneath it.
Ruth had once shown Nora an alarm like it in the estate kitchen.
She had said old alarms were honest because they had only one job.
Nora moved toward the desk.
Vivienne released her arm.
"Where are you going?"
"I feel sick."
"Stand still."
Nora bent forward as though dizzy.
Then she swept the blue ledger from the desk.
The book struck Marcus's knees.
He looked down.
Nora ran behind him and grabbed the small hammer.
She smashed the alarm glass.
A mechanical bell rang inside the office.
Emergency roof vents opened automatically.
Daniel stared upward.
The separate air system had been broken.
Cold wind entered through ceiling ducts.
The gas suppression system detected the pressure change.
Its countdown paused at ninety-eight seconds.
Across the tower, the mechanical voice repeated a new message.
Pressure fault.
Activation delayed.
Ruth saw the status change on the command screen.
"Nora did that."
The commander looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because she found the honest alarm."
Inside Adrian's office, Marcus seized Nora by the back of her sweater.
She screamed.
The private staircase door burst open.
Elena entered from the roof access with a metal fire tool in both hands.
She struck Marcus across the forearm.
He released Nora.
Elena pulled the child behind her.
"Mommy."
Nora wrapped both arms around her waist.
Vivienne stared as if the dead had walked into the room again.
"You look terrible."
Elena held the fire tool between them.
"You look temporary."
Marcus drew his weapon with his uninjured hand.
Daniel caught his wrist.
"No guns."
"She ruined the air system."
"We still need her alive."
"You need everyone alive until they sign something."
Marcus shoved Daniel away.
"That is why you always lose."
The office door shook beneath an impact from the corridor.
Adrian had reached the other side.
He had climbed through the maintenance shaft after the final director entered.
His injured hand bled through the brace.
He struck the lock again with a steel bar.
"Nora."
"Daddy."
Her voice came through the door.
Adrian hit it harder.
Daniel moved toward the private stairs.
"Vivienne, bring the ledger."
She did not move.
"Where are we going?"
"Roof."
"The helicopter cannot carry all of us."
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"I know."
Marcus understood.
He raised the handgun toward Daniel.
Vivienne stepped between them.
"Stop."
Marcus laughed.
"He planned to leave us from the beginning."
"Daniel."
Vivienne's voice sharpened.
"Tell him he is wrong."
Daniel looked toward the door as Adrian struck it again.
"There are four seats."
"Pilot, you, me, and Nora."
Vivienne counted.
Marcus's expression became empty.
"You were going to leave me."
"You are under a national arrest alert."
"So is she."
Marcus pointed at Vivienne.
"She controls Adrian's proxy until he signs the shares."
Daniel's honesty was brutal.
Vivienne realized she was not a partner.
She was paperwork with a pulse.
Marcus fired.
Daniel twisted aside.
The bullet struck the wall.
Elena pulled Nora behind the desk.
Vivienne grabbed the blue ledger and ran toward the roof stairs.
Marcus fired again.
The bullet shattered the office door lock.
Adrian drove through it.
He struck Marcus before the man could turn.
They crashed against the glass conference wall.
Daniel ran for the roof.
Vivienne followed.
Elena rose with Nora in her arms.
Adrian saw them.
The entire room disappeared from his attention except the two people holding each other.
Nora reached for him.
He crossed the office and wrapped both of them in his arms.
For one heartbeat, the tower, the ledger, and every enemy ceased to exist.
Then Marcus rose behind them with the handgun.
Caroline Shaw appeared in the broken doorway and struck him across the head with a fire extinguisher.
Marcus collapsed.
Caroline looked at Adrian.
"Survive long enough to regret it."
Despite everything, Adrian laughed.
Owen entered with the tactical team and secured Marcus.
The pressure alarm reset.
The gas system shut down across the tower.
Employees continued evacuating, but the immediate threat had ended.
Adrian touched Nora's face.
"Are you hurt?"
"My arm."
"Anything else?"
"I was scared."
"I know."
"You came back."
"Always."
Elena looked toward the roof stairs.
"Daniel has the helicopter."
Adrian turned.
"Vivienne has the ledger."
Owen spoke into his radio.
"Roof team, stop the aircraft."
Only static answered.
Daniel had disabled the roof channel.
Adrian moved toward the stairs.
Elena caught his arm.
"He wants you up there."
"He has the book."
"The book is evidence."
"It contains every victim's name."
Elena looked at Nora.
"Then we do not let him leave."
They climbed together.
The rooftop wind pushed rain across the concrete.
The helicopter waited near the edge with its rotors turning.
The pilot lay unconscious beside the landing pad.
Vivienne stood near the open cabin door holding the blue ledger.
Daniel stood behind her with a gun pressed against her back.
"Put the ledger inside."
She looked over her shoulder.
"You said we were leaving together."
"I said there were four seats."
"There are."
"I no longer need you in one."
Adrian emerged from the stairwell.
Daniel moved the gun toward him.
"Stop there."
Elena and Nora remained hidden below the final step.
Owen's team was seconds behind them.
Daniel looked at Adrian's empty hands.
"Where are the transfer documents?"
"In the boardroom."
"You were supposed to sign them."
"You were supposed to protect my family."
Daniel smiled without warmth.
"I protected the future of your company."
"You sold its children."
"Their parents sold them."
"You built the market."
Daniel's face hardened.
"You still think morality is something money can afford."
"No."
Adrian stepped into the rain.
"I think morality is what remains when money cannot save you."
Vivienne looked at Daniel.
"He will never sign."
"Then Nora will."
Daniel's eyes moved toward the stairwell.
He knew she was there.
"Her trust becomes controlling at eighteen."
Adrian understood the next stage of the plan.
Daniel did not need to own the company today.
He needed legal custody of Nora long enough to shape the future owner.
Vivienne understood too.
"You planned to keep her at Northbridge for eleven years."
Daniel said nothing.
Vivienne laughed.
The sound contained horror and admiration.
"I thought I was cruel."
Then she threw the blue ledger over the roof edge.
Daniel turned instinctively.
The book struck the lower maintenance deck instead of falling to the street.
Vivienne grabbed his gun hand.
They struggled beside the helicopter.
Adrian ran forward.
A shot fired into the night.
Vivienne fell.
Daniel reached for the helicopter door.
Nora screamed from the stairwell.
The sound stopped him.
He looked toward her.
For the first time, his control broke completely.
"You should have stayed asleep."
He raised the gun toward the child.
Elena stepped in front of Nora.
Adrian struck Daniel from the side.
The gun slid beneath the spinning rotor.
Daniel and Adrian crashed near the roof edge.
Concrete crumbled beneath Daniel's shoulder.
Adrian caught his wrist before he fell.
Daniel hung above sixty-two stories of empty air.
Rain ran across his face.
He looked at Adrian's injured hand gripping him.
"Let go."
"No."
"After everything I did?"
"You answer in court."
Daniel laughed weakly.
"You still need systems to make the world fair."
"No."
Adrian pulled harder.
"I need witnesses."
Owen reached them and helped drag Daniel onto the roof.
Officers secured his hands.
Paramedics moved toward Vivienne.
She was conscious.
The bullet had struck her shoulder.
She stared at Daniel with hatred.
"He planned all of it."
Daniel looked at her.
"Careful."
Vivienne smiled through the pain.
"You have no leverage left."
Daniel's expression changed.
He pressed his thumb against a small remote hidden beneath his sleeve.
A deep explosion shook the tower.
Fire burst from three floors below.
The roof tilted beneath them.
May you like
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"I never build only one ending."
