Chapter 15 - The Original Ledger.
The live image of the locked children disappeared after twenty-seven seconds.
No location appeared.
No timestamp appeared.
The children wore identical gray clothes without logos or labels.
The room behind them had no windows.
Daniel had learned from every mistake made at Northbridge.
He gave Adrian enough proof to create terror and not enough to create a rescue.
Lena ordered the hospital network disconnected from the outside world.
The screen went black.
Nora stared at her own reflection in it.
"Are they there because of me?"
Elena pulled her close.
"No."
"Vivienne said she would hurt people if I told."
"Vivienne hurts people because she chooses to."
Elena placed one hand over Nora's heart.
"The truth does not cause the harm."
"Then why does everybody get hurt when I say it?"
No adult answered quickly.
Ruth knelt beside her.
"Because lies build walls."
"And truth breaks them?"
"Yes."
"Do walls hurt when they fall?"
Ruth looked toward the image of the vanished children.
"Sometimes."
Nora's face tightened.
"Then we should move the children first."
Lena glanced at Adrian.
The child had stated the entire strategy more clearly than the adults.
They could not confront Daniel at the tower until they located the hostages.
They could not locate the hostages without making Daniel believe the exchange would proceed.
Adrian called Vale Meridian headquarters.
Vivienne answered from his office.
"Six o'clock."
"I heard you."
"Bring Elena and the ledger."
"I will bring the ledger."
"Elena comes too."
Adrian looked at his wife.
"No."
Vivienne laughed softly.
"You still think you can protect her by refusing me."
"You need the ledger more than you need Elena."
"I need both."
"Then show me the children again."
Silence followed.
Daniel's voice replaced hers.
"Do not negotiate through emotion, Adrian."
"You taught me that."
"Then remember the lesson."
"Show me the children."
"At five thirty."
"Live."
"Agreed."
"One more condition."
"You are not in a position to make conditions."
"Caroline Shaw remains unharmed."
Daniel paused.
Adrian understood from that pause that Caroline was inside the tower.
She had delayed Vivienne's control of the bank accounts.
She had become an obstacle.
"Caroline is attending a board session."
"Put her on the phone."
A longer silence followed.
Then Caroline spoke.
"Adrian, do not bring them anything."
Her voice sounded strained.
A sharp impact ended the sentence.
The phone changed hands.
Marcus spoke.
"She is unharmed for now."
Adrian's expression emptied.
"Touch her again and I burn the ledger."
Daniel returned.
"You do not know where it is."
"Elena does."
"Then ask her what happens when the chapel bell rings."
The call ended.
Everyone looked at Elena.
Her face had gone pale.
"What happens?"
Adrian moved toward her.
"The floor opens."
"What floor?"
"Beneath the altar."
Elena drew a slow breath.
"Daniel built a document vault inside the old crypt."
Margaret stared at her.
"There is no crypt beneath the chapel."
"There is now."
"When was it built?"
"The summer before the crash."
"On whose authority?"
Elena looked at Adrian.
"Mine."
He said nothing.
She continued before he could ask.
"Daniel convinced me the financial records needed a location outside company systems."
"So you let him build a vault on my property."
"I was trying to protect you."
"Everyone who betrayed me says that."
The words left Adrian before he could stop them.
Elena flinched.
Nora looked between them.
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I am sorry."
"Do not be."
Elena's voice hardened.
"You are right."
She looked down at her hands.
"I trusted Daniel because he gave fear a plan."
Margaret stepped closer.
"Fear loves plans that make secrecy feel responsible."
Elena met her gaze.
"I know that now."
Lena checked the time.
"We need the ledger."
"Daniel may have trapped the vault."
Owen spoke from the doorway.
"He knows we will go there."
"He also believes we need the ledger intact."
Adrian looked toward the covered windows.
"That limits what he can destroy."
Margaret shook her head.
"Do not confuse his need for evidence with a reluctance to kill you."
"I stopped confusing Daniel with anything human when I learned he watched Elena through glass."
Adrian turned to Lena.
"We go through the north field."
"You are not going."
"The chapel is my property."
"It is a crime scene controlled by a man who knows your habits."
"Then I am the person most likely to see what he changed."
Lena looked at Elena.
"Can you open the vault without him?"
"Yes."
"Then Adrian stays."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"You just escaped captivity."
"And Daniel spent two years believing captivity made me useless."
Elena lifted the hospital blanket from her legs.
"I am done helping him believe that."
The chapel stood beyond the north garden among white oaks planted by Adrian's great-grandfather.
Rain darkened the stone walls.
The bell tower rose above the fog.
Police approached through the woods while Adrian and Elena entered from the eastern path.
Lena walked three steps behind them.
Owen circled toward the rear door with a tactical team.
The chapel smelled of wet stone and old wax.
Dust covered the pews.
A single candle burned near the altar.
Someone had been there moments earlier.
Adrian looked at the bell rope.
It moved slightly.
"Do not touch it."
Elena crossed to the altar.
She lifted the brass candle stand on the right side.
Beneath it was a small keypad.
"Daniel said the code should be something Vivienne could never guess."
"What did you choose?"
Elena looked at Nora's photograph inside Adrian's wallet.
"The minute she was born."
She entered four digits.
A mechanism moved beneath the floor.
The center aisle divided.
Stone panels slid apart to reveal metal stairs descending into darkness.
A bell rang above them.
Everyone froze.
No one had touched the rope.
The sound rolled through the chapel.
Then the entrance doors slammed shut.
Steel bars dropped across the windows from hidden slots in the stone.
Lena drew her weapon.
"Trap."
Smoke began entering from vents beneath the pews.
Adrian covered Elena's mouth with his sleeve.
Owen's voice sounded through the radio.
"The rear door sealed."
"Cut power."
"System is mechanical."
The smoke smelled sweet.
Elena recognized it.
"Same gas they used at Northbridge."
Lena pulled three emergency respirators from her tactical bag.
She gave one to Elena and one to Adrian.
"You?"
Adrian asked.
"I have a mask."
She secured it over her face.
They descended the metal stairs.
The vault door stood open below.
Shelves lined a narrow stone room.
Every shelf was empty.
Only one black ledger remained on a steel table.
Adrian reached for it.
Elena caught his arm.
A red lighter rested on top.
It was identical to Vivienne's.
The initials D.M. were engraved at the base.
Daniel had left his signature.
Lena examined the table.
"Pressure plate."
A wire ran beneath the ledger into the floor.
"If we lift it, something triggers."
"What?"
"I would rather not learn."
Elena looked toward the shelves.
"The real ledger was blue."
Adrian stared at the black book.
"He knew we would remember black."
"He always believed color was beneath notice."
Elena crossed to the rear wall.
One stone had a faint blue line along its edge.
She pressed it.
A smaller compartment opened.
Inside was a blue ledger sealed in plastic.
Beside it sat a cassette recorder.
Elena pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the vault.
"Elena, if you found this, then Vivienne failed to keep you asleep."
Adrian clenched his jaw.
"Adrian, if you are beside her, then grief finally made you useful."
Lena scanned the walls for speakers or cameras.
The recorder was old and self-contained.
Daniel continued.
"The black ledger is connected to the chapel bell."
"Lifting it will release enough gas to kill everyone above and destroy the vault below."
Lena studied the wire again.
"He is telling the truth."
"The blue ledger contains the accounts you want."
Daniel's recorded voice became almost conversational.
"It also contains the names of people who paid Northbridge."
"Some are criminals."
"Some are desperate parents."
"Some are judges, senators, and directors whose cooperation keeps governments functioning."
"Release the book, and you destroy more families than mine."
Adrian looked at Elena.
"He wants us afraid to use it."
The recording continued.
"Bring it to me by six."
"Come through the public entrance of Vale Tower."
"Every camera in the city will see whether you value one child more than twenty."
The tape clicked off.
Lena sealed the blue ledger in an evidence bag.
"We leave the black one."
A metallic sound came from the stairs.
The entrance above had locked.
Owen's team tried cutting through the rear door.
The smoke thickened in the chapel.
Adrian searched the vault walls.
He remembered playing in the chapel as a child.
His grandfather had once warned him never to hide where the dead needed air.
At the time, Adrian thought it was superstition.
Now he looked toward the lowest stone in the north wall.
A narrow draft moved dust across the floor.
"There is another exit."
He removed the stone.
Cold air entered.
Behind it was an old burial passage leading beneath the cemetery.
They crawled through as the respirators began to empty.
The passage emerged inside a stone mausoleum twenty yards from the chapel.
Owen pulled them into the rain.
The chapel doors remained sealed.
Smoke escaped beneath the roof.
Lena ordered the bomb unit to secure the black ledger.
Adrian held the blue book against his chest.
"Now we find the children."
Back at the hospital, Ruth watched the deleted Bunny video alone.
The state technician had restored six additional minutes.
Daniel entered Nora's bedroom three months before the crash carrying a second rabbit.
He believed the child was asleep.
He opened Bunny's seam and removed the original silver camera.
Then he replaced it with another.
The second camera looked identical.
It belonged to him.
He tested the feed using his phone.
A message appeared on his screen.
VIVIENNE: DOES THE CHILD HEAR US?
Daniel typed a response.
NOT YET.
He placed the red lighter on Nora's nightstand.
Then he whispered toward the sleeping child.
"Your mother should have trusted me."
Nora's eyes opened after he left.
She had been awake the entire time.
The video continued.
Nora climbed out of bed and removed the replacement camera.
She placed it inside the second rabbit.
Then she took Elena's original silver camera from beneath her pillow and returned it to Bunny.
The child had defeated Daniel's surveillance without understanding the war around her.
Ruth watched the final frame.
A reflection appeared in the bedroom mirror.
Someone stood in the hallway behind Daniel.
The image was small.
Ruth enlarged it.
Captain Reeves watched from the doorway.
Her phone rang.
Margaret's name appeared.
"Ruth, the hospital fire alarm has activated."
Ruth looked toward the corridor.
Red lights began flashing.
"There is no fire."
"I know."
Margaret's voice became urgent.
"Nora is not in her room."
Ruth ran.
The pediatric corridor filled with smoke from theatrical canisters.
Nurses shouted directions.
Security doors opened automatically.
A wheelchair stood abandoned near the service elevator.
Nora's blue dress lay across the seat.
May you like
On top of it rested a red lighter engraved with two initials.
