Chapter 13 - The Lawyer with a Gun.
Daniel Mercer looked less like a rescuer than a man who had escaped his own funeral.
Blood darkened the left side of his shirt.
A bandage circled his head beneath his silver hair.
His hand shook around the pistol.
Captain Reeves raised his weapon halfway.
Daniel aimed at the floor between them and fired.
The bullet shattered a tile.
Reeves froze.
"Place the gun on the table."
Daniel's voice was steady despite the blood on his clothes.
"You are inside a police station."
Reeves tried to sound authoritative.
"A police station you emptied before bringing a private citizen into an interrogation room."
Daniel nodded toward Vivienne.
"A private citizen who is threatening a child."
Vivienne remained seated.
Her hand rested inches from Ruth's property envelope.
"Daniel, you need a hospital."
"You should have made sure I reached one."
Her eyes narrowed.
"I did not attack you."
"No."
Daniel looked at Reeves.
"You outsourced it."
Reeves glanced toward the one-way mirror.
The movement confirmed more than a confession.
Daniel stepped into the room.
"Gun on the table."
Reeves lowered it slowly.
Before the weapon touched the surface, Vivienne grabbed Ruth's property envelope.
She tore the plastic open and ripped the watch free.
Ruth surged against the chain securing her cuffs.
"Stop her."
Vivienne twisted the watchband.
The memory card fell into her palm.
Daniel moved the pistol toward her.
"Give it to me."
She laughed.
"You think I survived this long by giving you evidence?"
"You survived because I protected you."
The sentence changed the room.
Ruth stared at Daniel.
Vivienne smiled.
"There he is."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I protected you before I knew what you did to Elena."
"You knew enough."
"Not about Northbridge."
"You designed the rooms."
"For domestic violence witnesses."
Vivienne looked at Ruth.
"He always makes the prison sound noble."
Daniel stepped closer.
"The card."
Vivienne held it between two fingers.
"Open Ruth's handcuffs."
Reeves did not move.
Daniel shifted the pistol toward him.
"Now."
Reeves took the key from his belt.
He unlocked Ruth from the table.
Ruth stood carefully.
Her wrists were bruised.
Her hip ached from the struggle outside Northbridge.
Vivienne kept the card raised.
"No one leaves until I have a car."
"You are not negotiating."
Daniel's voice remained low.
"Then no one sees what Nora recorded."
She moved the card toward her mouth.
Ruth understood first.
Vivienne intended to swallow it.
Ruth seized the metal water pitcher from the table and threw the water into Vivienne's face.
Vivienne gasped.
The memory card slipped from her fingers.
Daniel lunged.
Reeves moved at the same time.
The room became a crush of bodies and metal.
Ruth dropped to the floor and searched beneath the table.
The emergency lights flashed red.
Shoes struck the tile around her.
A hand closed around her ankle.
She kicked backward.
Someone cursed.
Her fingers found the memory card near the wall.
She closed her fist around it.
A second gunshot filled the room.
The one-way mirror shattered.
Every person stopped.
Daniel stood with the pistol raised toward the ceiling.
Reeves had fallen against the wall.
Vivienne was gone.
A narrow service door behind the broken mirror hung open.
She had known the station better than the officers working inside it.
Daniel looked at Ruth's closed hand.
"Do you have it?"
"Do you?"
She looked at the pistol.
He lowered it.
"I came here to save you."
"You came here for the card."
"Both can be true."
"That is the kind of sentence guilty men purchase from lawyers."
Daniel's face hardened.
Before he could answer, the main corridor filled with state officers.
Lena entered with her weapon raised.
Owen followed.
They took in the shattered mirror, Reeves on the floor, and Daniel holding the pistol.
"Drop it."
Lena's command left no room for friendship.
Daniel placed the gun down.
"Reeves is compromised."
"Hands where I can see them."
"Vivienne escaped through the service corridor."
"Hands."
Daniel raised them.
Lena secured him first.
Owen handcuffed Reeves.
Ruth opened her fist and showed the card.
"This is from Bunny."
Lena sealed it in a new evidence bag herself.
"No local chain of custody."
She looked toward Reeves.
"It goes directly to the state lab."
Daniel leaned against the wall.
His account of the courthouse attack came in broken pieces while the paramedic worked.
Reeves had approached him in the parking garage wearing civilian clothes.
Two men blocked the exit and demanded the chapel ledger.
Daniel claimed he refused.
They struck him, placed him inside an ambulance, and planned to deliver him to Northbridge.
He escaped when the vehicle slowed near the detention center.
A pistol had been left beneath the passenger seat.
That part troubled Lena.
Professional abductors did not leave loaded weapons within reach.
Daniel explained that one attacker was injured during the struggle.
Ruth watched his face as he spoke.
He described pain accurately and fear badly.
It sounded rehearsed.
The wound in his side proved someone had attacked him.
It did not prove the attack happened against his will.
Lena quietly ordered the ambulance searched for Daniel's blood pattern and fingerprints.
The results would later show he had sat in the front passenger seat before the struggle began.
Blood spread beneath the bandage at his side.
"You need to watch it now."
"I need to know why you are listed on Northbridge's payment approvals."
"Cloned credentials."
"Why did your foundation own Old Mercy House?"
"It was a witness shelter project."
"Why were there restraint rooms in the basement?"
"Because Marcus changed the construction after my foundation withdrew."
Lena stared at him.
"Why were you in Adrian's garage after Elena's crash?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Because Elena called me."
"Her recording said you ignored three calls."
"I was in federal court."
"Phones work outside courtrooms."
"My phone had been taken into evidence during a sanctions hearing."
"Convenient."
"True."
Daniel's knees weakened.
Owen caught him before he fell.
A paramedic entered and pressed gauze against the wound.
Lena did not stop questioning him.
"What plan did Vivienne change?"
Daniel looked at Ruth.
Then at the sealed memory card.
"Elena and I planned to move Nora to a protected location."
Ruth's voice became cold.
"Without Adrian's knowledge?"
"His phones were compromised."
"So you chose to frighten his wife and steal his child?"
"We chose to keep Nora alive."
"Elena drove onto a mountain road with Nora in the back seat."
"That was not the route I gave her."
Daniel's face tightened with pain.
"She was supposed to meet an investigator at a federal safe house near Lake Briar."
"Why did she change course?"
"Vivienne called from Elena's phone."
"What did she say?"
"That Nora had been taken."
Ruth felt the room shift.
"But Nora was in the car."
"Elena did not know that."
Daniel drew a shallow breath.
"Nora had hidden beneath blankets in the third row after following her mother to the garage."
Ruth remembered the crash report.
Investigators believed Elena had knowingly taken Nora on the trip.
Nora's child seat had been found unlatched.
Everyone blamed Elena for failing to secure it.
"Vivienne lured Elena onto the mountain."
Daniel nodded.
"I realized too late."
"Then why were you in the garage?"
"Cross Security intercepted the wreck before state police processed it."
"How?"
"A deputy redirected the tow truck."
Daniel looked toward Reeves.
"His name was Captain Reeves."
Reeves stared at the floor.
Daniel continued.
"I went to the estate because Elena's emergency tracker sent one final signal from the garage."
"You saw Vivienne and Marcus."
"Yes."
"Why did you leave?"
Daniel's eyes filled with shame.
"Marcus showed me a live video of Nora in a hospital bed."
"And threatened her?"
"He said she would die if I called police."
Ruth's disgust returned.
"So you left Elena with them."
"I believed Elena was dead."
"You did not check."
"Her body was listed at the county morgue."
"A body you never saw."
Daniel looked away.
"No."
A paramedic lifted him onto a gurney.
Lena walked beside it.
"You are not cleared."
"I know."
"You are a witness and a suspect."
"I know."
Daniel caught Ruth's gaze before they moved him through the door.
"Watch the final thirty seconds."
"Why?"
"Because Bunny recorded more than the bathroom."
The state lab created a secure copy within twenty minutes.
Lena, Ruth, and Owen watched inside a mobile evidence unit.
The first videos showed Nora sleeping.
Vivienne entered her bedroom on several nights and placed drops inside the vitamin bottle.
Dr. Kessler appeared twice to examine Nora while she was unconscious.
Marcus installed the porcelain flower camera near the bed.
Then the date reached the night before the burn.
Nora carried Bunny through the hidden study door.
The rabbit's camera captured the box beneath the fireplace stone.
Inside was the hospital photograph Nora had described.
Elena lay alive in a Northbridge bed six weeks after her funeral.
Vivienne entered the study and saw Nora holding the picture.
The video shook as Nora ran.
The next file began in the bathroom.
Bunny lay on the laundry hamper facing the open room.
Vivienne held Nora's wrist.
The red lighter flame touched the child's arm.
"Tell me where the key is."
"No."
"Your mother stayed stubborn too."
"Mommy is dead."
Vivienne smiled.
"Not yet."
The flame moved closer.
Ruth appeared in the doorway and struck Vivienne's hand.
The rest matched the scene everyone had already described.
There was no accident.
There was no ambiguity.
Vivienne had tortured a child for information.
Ruth covered her mouth.
Owen looked away from the screen.
Lena kept watching.
The final thirty seconds came after Ruth carried Nora from the room.
Bunny remained on the hamper.
Vivienne returned alone.
She retrieved the lighter from beneath the vanity.
Then she made a call.
"She found Elena's photograph."
A man's voice answered through the speaker.
It was distorted by distance.
"Then the child remembers too much."
Vivienne looked toward the doorway.
"Daniel, tell me what to do."
The voice replied.
"Move the wedding forward."
Ruth stared at the screen.
Owen's face went still.
The recording ended.
Lena replayed the voice twice.
"It sounds like him."
Ruth thought of Daniel standing in the police station with a gun.
She thought of his claim that Vivienne had changed his plan.
"He knew about the burn before he came to the hospital."
Owen reached for his phone.
"Daniel is being transported to Saint Matthew's."
Lena stopped him.
"Do not call the hospital."
"Why?"
"Because if Daniel is involved, whoever answers may be involved too."
Ruth watched the blank screen.
Then another file appeared beneath the recovered folder.
It had been deleted and partially overwritten.
The lab technician restored the first frame.
Daniel stood beside Nora's bed three months before Elena's crash.

He held the red lighter in one hand.
In the other, he held a second stuffed rabbit.
