Chapter 2 - Her Mother’s NameVictoria released the strap.

Not from compassion.

From calculation.

She straightened slowly and forced a laugh.

“This child is confused.”

Lily remained on the floor with the clutch pressed against her chest.

A man near the velvet ropes whispered:

“Isn’t that Emma Reed’s daughter?”

Another answered:

“The staff woman who stole from the gala fund.”

Lily heard him.

Her cheeks flushed deeper.

Emma had worked late nights assembling donor packets, checking invoices and cleaning up after people who never learned her name.

When money disappeared from the Langford Children’s Fund, Victoria blamed her.

The board believed Victoria.

Emma earned forty-two thousand dollars a year.

Victoria wore a necklace worth more than Emma’s apartment building.

To the guests, that was enough evidence.

Lily pushed herself upright.

“My mother didn’t steal.”

Victoria looked toward the recording phones.

“Someone should take her outside.”

Still, no one moved.

Public cruelty became uncomfortable only when cameras appeared.

Then Lily touched the jewel clasp.

“My mom said never to open it alone.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“What exactly did she put inside?”

Lily looked up.

“If you don’t know, why are you trying so hard to take it?”

A few guests lowered their phones in surprise.

The child had asked the question every adult had avoided.

Then the clutch made a soft click.

A hidden compartment had unlocked.
