Inside were three objects.
A brass key.
A sealed white envelope.
A small black memory drive.
Victoria stepped forward.
“That property belongs to the foundation.”
Lily pulled the bag closer.
“My mother bought it.”
“With whose money?”
The insult was deliberate.
People like Emma could not own beautiful things without someone asking what they had stolen.
Lily looked toward the guests.
“My mom saved for six months.”
Silence.
One woman lowered her eyes.
She had once tipped Emma twenty dollars after demanding three hours of unpaid work.
Victoria extended her hand.
“Give me the drive.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what it contains.”
Lily’s voice shook.
“My mother did.”
Victoria’s expression hardened again.
“She was unstable before she died.”
The word moved through the room.
Unstable.
The same word the foundation had used when Emma challenged its accounting.
The same word powerful families used when poorer women refused to remain grateful.
Then an elderly donor in a navy gown spoke from the crowd.
“Why would an unstable employee have access to foundation records?”
Victoria turned sharply.
“She forged them.”
Lily opened the envelope.
Across the first page was Emma’s handwriting:
