Chapter 8 - The VoteThe foundation board assembled around the gala table.

Guests remained.

Phones continued recording.

Victoria demanded the meeting be postponed.

The attorney refused.

“The clause requires an immediate review when the triggering conduct occurs publicly.”

Victoria pointed at Lily.

“She entered without an invitation.”

The ballroom manager opened the guest file.

“Emma Reed’s daughter has a permanent invitation.”

Victoria stared.

“Who authorized that?”

“Emma.”

Again.

The woman Victoria had tried to erase had planned for her daughter to enter the room.

The board reviewed the videos.

Victoria pulling the strap.

Lily sliding across the marble.

Victoria calling Emma a thief.

Guests refusing to intervene.

The evidence was undeniable.

One director still defended Victoria.

“She has spent twenty years building this foundation.”

Lily looked at him.

“My mother spent years building it too.”

The director fell silent.

The vote began.

Victoria was suspended.

Her financial authority was frozen.

All personal reimbursements were placed under audit.

Emma’s name was restored as co-founder.

Lily’s fifty-one-percent interest was provisionally recognized through an independent child trust.

Victoria’s diamond necklace seemed suddenly too heavy.

Then the elderly donor approached Lily.

“What would you like changed first?”

Lily looked toward the ballroom staff standing quietly near the walls.

“Did everyone working tonight get paid?”

May you like

The room went silent.

Victoria had not even asked.
